Re: iphone 4 case
I'd go silicon, because it's more comfortable, there are cooler silicon cases around and it's more protective.
There are cool cases shaped like cassettes or game boys that I've seen, but also more simple ones. If you drop it a silicon case will protect it a lot more than a hard case, and a hard case is going to get scratched itself.
If you are just going for aesthetics, one of my friends had a sticker on the back with a design instead of a case. Otherwise I think a leather case would look the coolest. -

I have a 4S and got this jelly-like case from eBay for £2! It came with two screen protectors too. It's lovely and fits very snugly

Re: iphone 4 case
I spent hours finding and deciding which case to buy for my brand new shiny iPhone 4S back in October.
I narrowed it down to three, two by one brand, one by another.

The REFLEX: Otterbox's mid-price case that features two snap on pieces that protect the phone with silicone but also a semi-hard exterior.

The COMMUTER: Otterbox's other mid-price case that utilizes a silicone case with a snap on shell that fits around it for maximum protection.

The CANDYSHELL: Speck's contribution to this price point, a brilliant looking and very protective case using clever design to prevent impact shock.
All three can be got for £20 on eBay/Amazon in the UK now. Make sure you get the newer versions with a larger camera cutout because otherwise the flash can have issues with whitewash when pictures are taken. The older ones sort of fit AROUND the iPhone case as opposed to just being the correct ovular shape.
In the end, I went for the Commuter. They were all difficult to get ahold of and I had to get the Commuter in from the US but it was worth it. Dropped it onto concrete from 5 ft up by accident, flung it at cast iron weight sets by mistake (
) and all sorts. The reflex just seemed tacky, and the Candyshell wasn't available at the time at all without paying an extra £15 for shipping from the US on top of the official price of about £25.
So to finish, I'd recommend link 2 based on experience, but I'm sure the Candyshell will work just fine. They look better too
Hope that helps
