Would RS be as respected as Maths?
Discussion of individual medical schools and their courses for applicants and current students. Not for all those 'Am I Good Enough' questions.

Would RS be as respected as Maths?
I will probably apply to study Medicine in the future and in particular Cambridge but I am wondering if I took 3 sciences and RS would I be considered for an interview/ a position as much as if I took Maths instead of RS. I am trying to decide which to take; I think I could get a higher result in RS but would I be more highly considered with a slightly lower result in Maths against a higher result in RS?

Re: Would RS be as respected as Maths? The short answer is no, Maths will look better.(Original post by Tuvok1153)
Yes, that is why I am taking it. I love the philosophical side rather than actually studying other religions. I am wondering if Cambridge would like it as much as Maths though? -

Re: Would RS be as respected as Maths?
oh for goodness sake, if only you knew how many threads we get like this, gcse students saying they want to do medicine at cambridge, asking which a-levels cambridge would prefer, whether they could get in to cambridge with XYZ predicted GCSE grades

This is medicine for goodness sake, the prestige of oxbridge doesn't really apply to a course like this. Just choose chem, bio, and any 2 respected subjects you could get an A in. -
Re: Would RS be as respected as Maths? If you do smashingly well in RS, then of course it would look better than a B in Maths. You probably have a good grasp of your strengths and weaknesses at if you want to get into Cambo your UMS has to be pretty good (averaging around 90% ideally).(Original post by Tuvok1153)
Even if I didn't get a mark as high as I could in RS?
But honestly, Cambo would like a high grade in Maths over a high grade in RS (at least, that's the impression I got from some of the Colleges).
Again, you've got to play to your strengths though. If you think a high grade is achievable and you'd enjoy it more then go for it, it will probably work better for you.
Whether or not you did RS or Maths will be dwarfed by the importance of the BMAT at the end of the day (as long as you are doing 3 sciences anyway). -
Re: Would RS be as respected as Maths? As far as I'm aware almost all medical schools offer an intercalated degree year and seeing as all the UK medical schools are governed by the GMC the teaching quality of each medical school should be much of a sameness.(Original post by Tuvok1153)
I don't care about prestige! My reason for applying would be because of the teaching quality and the intercalated degree year. I plan on doing the A-Level you said about but I want to know how to maximise my chances of entry. -
Re: Would RS be as respected as Maths?Maybe so, but Cambridge will probably have better teachers and facilities than somewhere else.(Original post by WillLeeWhite)

Re: Would RS be as respected as Maths?again, you're only in GCSE year. You have no idea, medicine isn't like that in the UK. Oxbridge do very traditional medicine courses, highly academic and demanding, but most who know about medicine would tell you that it's not that special compared to everywhere else in the UK. The standard is high, the unis vary greatly, and they all lead to the SAME job.(Original post by Tuvok1153)
