im about to apply for my accomodation in edinburgh. ive read through some of the threads on the UoE page but i dont really know what accomodation to go for so i thought id post on here and see if any of the different locations have benefits from a vet students point of view. i am going to choose self catered. theres so many to choose from i dont know what to do yet !
thanks in advance -
Re: edinburgh vet students
I lived in Warrender park crescent in my first year, it is in a beautiful location (The Meadows) but it was quite "far away" from everyone else. During exam time it is pretty quiet though (although I suppose that also depends on your flatmates). In the winter it was awful trying to get through the meadows to summerhall (I suppose now you would be heading to the bus stop for Easter Bush, same location really), it was SO icy! It felt a little "detached" from the rest of the halls is my main point, but if you're willing to walk through the meadows at night (done it plenty of times and I had no problems but based on recent events I wouldn't do it now!) and walk a good 20 minutes to get to the other halls then it's a really nice place. Self catered is the way to go! People who were in catered seemed to hate it, at least based on what my friends have told me. The meal times were so awkward for them so it limited what they could do in the evenings/at weekends etc.
Congrats on getting into Edinburgh! I was helping out with the people coming for interviews, so you might have seen me (long red hair and Scottish, difficult to miss haha). I'm a third year and the course has been amazing so far! -
Re: edinburgh vet students
cheers for the quick reply!
im excited to go to edinburgh. loved the city when i came up for my interview. dont think i remember seeing you, if i did then i was probably too busy being nervous and thinking of questions the interviewers would ask ! if warrender park crescent is about 20 mins away is the sciennes area about the same distance from cowgate ect.? i think darroch probably is too close to where all the action is if im going to need some peace to study...i may be wrong -
Re: edinburgh vet students
i'd love to also ask about the application form. there's a box on there labelled 'ten digit personal id' but no one seems to agree on what i'm supposed to enter there! i've asked on tsr and people have said either enter your ucas number or you're not supposed to put anything. i've phoned edinburgh up and they've said that you don't put anything there, but other people have phoned/emailed and have been told to put their ucas number so i'm really not sure what to do
as someone who's applied for accommodation, what did you do?

Re: edinburgh vet students
I have friends that lived in WP first year and really liked it. I think now it might be a closer walk to the bus stop for the 15? Could be wrong though. I live on Sciennes road in private housing and I agree on icy days it can be tricky. It isn't necessary to walk through the Meadows to get to Summerhall though, and I don't think much (if at all) quicker. To get to city center it definitely is quicker.
I lived in Blackfriars my first year, which I enjoyed but some of my friends didn't. It really depends on your neighbours I guess. Blackfriars is off Cowgate/the Royal Mile, so much more in the city center, which can be noisier. It is a student hostel as well as a residence, so again can be noisy but I can honestly say the only time I found it excessive I spoke to the desk staff and they asked them to stop (a guy with a loudspeaker). I liked that it was self-catered but there was a restaurant downstairs if you wanted to use that. I also really liked having my own LARGE (4 person hostel room) room and private bathroom! I had good neighbours that were respectful and helped to keep the shared areas (kitchen) clean, but my friend had problems in that area, so again, depends on your neighbours. If they can't prove whom is making the mess you ALL get fined equally-haven't known anyone it has happened to but those are the rules. I would say it was a 20-25min walk, 30 if slow/really bad weather to Summerhall, but now that we all bus out to the Bush the bus stop would be closer.
Good luck and welcome to the Dick Vet!
