Effects of these drugs on the heart, help? <strong><font color
Does anyone vaguely know the effects of these drugs on the heart? (Heart rate, receptors, pathways?)

    Acetylcholine
    Atropnie
    phentolamine
    caffeine
    nicotine
    propranalol
    3 HT
    5HT (serotonin)

Even a tiny bit of help would be appreciated!

(i'll post them as I remember) acetylcholine acts on the m2 receptor which decreases adenylate cyclase.. This decreases activity of cAMP which then decrease the activity of protein kinase a, this in turn decreases amount of Ca entry which affect the myocytes within the heart effectively causing heart rate to lower. (I may have missed a few steps)

I think you mean atropine? Atropine blocks the action of the vagus nerve which decreases heart rate - hence atropine is given to increase heart rate.

    For phentolamine: read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phentolamine

actually, what'll help you alot in most of these, rather than me paraphrasing - you're better off reading about beta blockers, types of heart conditions etc. providing you with answers just won't help you.

if you are an undergraduate you should at least know the effects of ACh and NA on the heart (purines and other cotransmitters would also be nice) and the balance during the normal autonomic control (resting vagal tone etc). you can then look up the classes of drugs that you have above and consequently mechanistically describe many of their actions.

are you injecting them systemically or looking for direct effects?

We did not apply that list of drugs to the heart, we just need to research them for the study questions

sorry im unsure what you are saying, so you don't need to know what they do to the heart but what they do in general? or do you mean you have to see what they do in general but one of the ways in which you are doing that is by describing their effects on the heart? if the latter you would be better off describing in the context of the cardiovascular system in general.

edit: for clarity, are you able to post the specific questions you are attempting to answer? also what year are you in just to make it easier?
