help, med vs dents?
hey,
just wonderin if anyone could help me
im basically stuck between medicine and dentistry as degrees, I always disregarded dentistry at first, as I thought its so limited in comparison to medicine, but after doing work experience in maxillofacial I found it pretty interesting, so did further work experience at a dental surgery and have now found myself stuck between the two.
any advice with deciding which i'd be better with?
thanks in advance -

For example, I for one have never been interested in dentistry, it has always been medicine for me. See, that didn't help you at all did it? haha
I might not be able to decide for you, but I can give you some pointers on what to do...
Why not get more work experience in both professional environments and see which one you like more?
Talk to each professional about the good and bad points of their chosen field?
Ask current medical and dentistry students about what they're studying and see if this is of any interest to you.
Doing these things may help you decide which one you are best suited for!
Do you prefer learning about just oral healthcare?, or would you prefer learning about the whole body?
Would you prefer using your skills and knowledge in maintaining/preserving/improving oral health, or using your skills and knowledge to maintain/increase quality of life?
I hope I could help, good luck, I hope you make the right decision.

Hmm true point, I've had about a months worth of work experience in both fields, and for both fields neither of the disadvantages put me off, the only difference for me is that medicine theres more variety and dentistry the course after university is shorter. Most people are telling me to do dentistry because the lifestyle is more flexible for a woman, but I don't think thats a good enough reason imo
Hmm, I guess I have until summer to decide.
Thanks though

Re: help, med vs dents?haha yeah, that's definitely not a good enough reason :')(Original post by AishaTara)

You need to find out which one you're more passionate about! Which, in your case, won't be easy! haha
Sorry I couldn't be of more help! -
Re: help, med vs dents?True, I find medicine more engaging, but that may be due to the fact I was interested in that first(Original post by lsaul95)

Re: help, med vs dents?
As others have said, the decision is yours.
Have you tried doing work experience in medicine related settings? For example, you may be able to "shadow" a doctor doing a clinic or a surgery. This is difficult to get into, but if you write to your hospital, they may offer you a chance. I know people who have done this. This will allow you to see the "other side" and therefore help you make a better decision.
As you are aware, in dentistry the options are limited COMPARED to medicine. But it doesn't mean you can't go far in dentistry. Sometimes you could get bored doing the same sort of things as a dentist, but it depends on person to person. I hope you will take a good decision. -

Dentists learn a huge amount of medicine. Don't forget they learn everything from the waist up...not just the mouth. Dentists certainly improve peoples quality of life...what about a restorative dentist producing obturators for people who have had resections due to oral cancer. This means that people can eat and speak again. I think that's improving quality of life a HUGE deal... -
Re: help, med vs dents?definitely, most people have braces, I cant imagine how id look without it :O and when people have no teeth its dentists who put artificial ones; its just as important and interesting imo(Original post by LL1)
