I am thinking about Warwick university for Physics, but I am concerned about the commute to Warwick university each day. In the second and third year, how long on average does it take to get to the Uni (this would depend on where you are, but whats the worst and best case scenario?) I read somewhere that it takes an hour on the bus, but you should get the bus an hour earlier because there is a massive rush.

So say I had a lecture at 9am, would that mean I have to get up at around 7am? How did you find the commute? do you get used to it? does it affect social life because you have to get up early the next morning?#

Great question, i would like to know the answer aswell, for me its an hours drive is it worth it

I live in Leamington and it really depends on the time of the day. I live in south leamington, furthest away, and I normally get the bus an hour before I'm due to be on campus. So if I have a lecture at 12, I'll get to the bus stop at about 11. It can vary from 20 minutes to 50 minutes, depending on traffic.
It's not too bad once you get used to it

But if you live in Coventry/Canley/Kenilworth, the journey's a lot shorter. Canley's about a 10 minute walk.

I've heard of these kind of worst-case scenarios from people living in Leamington, but I live in Canley and I can get to a 9am if I leave the house at 8.50 (I walk there). In Kenilworth (not an amazing place to live for other reasons), you could leave the house at 8.30 to get to the bus stop and take the bus.

You could have trouble getting a spot if you don't arrive early in the morning - I don't know much about the parking situation. Are you not able to get somewhere closer?

It really depends whether you are in South or North Leamington. I never had to deal with a full bus, because I lived in the South part and the bus runs South to North. The bus usually took around 45 minutes, but then I was a lazy arts student with lectures at noon, rather than a busy science student travelling at rush hour.

Whatever you do though, don't live in Coventry. it's cheaper, and closer. But it's definitely not worth it. The student life is in Leamington.

Coventry is 2.5ish miles walking/on a bike. To get to a 9am you need to leave the house at 8:30 if you travel by bus (housemates). I cycle and leave at 8:50, lectures start at 9:05 onwards. It's not so bad.

Although i'd agree with the above it's worth the extra time to live in Leamington. You have to be more organised, possibly.

I disagree on the previous points about Leam. I think if you have a lot of friends there with you then it is fine and the commute might become bearable...BUT if your friends will be in Coventry/Canley then save yourself the bus times and live there too.

I speak from the standpoint of someone who did a year abroad in second year so never moved out to Leam. I was campus first year, Italy second year, campus again third year, and I will be in Coventry next year. However I have had boyfriends who lived in Coventry and Leamington and obviously stayed around theirs...and Leam was definitely a hassle. To the point that if I didn't have lectures for three days straight I would just stay there instead of go home because I couldn't be bothered with the bus!

Is the option then, available to accomodate on campus in the 3rd year? - (with onyl a slight chance of getting in or is the option not even evailable?).
How about 2nd year?

If it's a standard three year undergraduate course then you can apply to be on campus in your third year, although not everyone will get it (I don't know what the chances are). Second years are not able to live on campus.

You have to move off campus in second year. For third year you have the option to apply for the ballot to get back on campus...I'm not sure exactly how many people get back on campus, but there is a waiting list you can apply to if you don't get it as people will reject their campus places.

The exception to this is if you do a year abroad. If you are coming back from a year abroad you get guaranteed campus accommodation for the year after.

As a second year who lives in south leam, I hate the commute. 9 am lectures mean getting up at 7 (if you dont sacrifice showers and breakfast). Now it is term 3, getting in everyday for 9 is getting really boring. Unfortunately warwick has an attitude of 'never live in coventry because it is **** because someone told me once'. These people then go live 8 miles away in some **** part of leamington because that is what everyone else does. In the end the choice is simple : cheap rent, short commute but less social life (coventry) or the exact opposite for leamington(and after you have been to smack and evolve a few times the social life is a moot point). Don't even get me started on the U1. Coventry would be good if people gave it a chance and lived there. Some people go 3 years without stepping foot in coventry and would still tell freshers 'oh coventry is ****, live in leamington'.

The commute to warwick from Coventry is soooo easy and quick. Lots of buses along the way. Also some areas v close to uni, ie Tile Hill and Canley which are walkable. Earlsdon is a really nice place to be and you can cycle or catch one of the many buses which take about 15 mins direct to uni. The commute from Leam to warwick is really bad and laboriously long at times esp in winter and rain. If you want a night out in Leam you can do this easily, but getting into uni regularly .....?

If you're looking for accommodation - speak to the student welfare dept (Ken), they work on behalf of the students (not university) and have details of good landlords. Private student accommodation tends to be good quality and living 'off-campus' gives you the chance to unwind and escape the 'bubble' whilst not being too far away.
