Re: Anyone play the oboe?A lot of oboists fall into the trap of just tensing up and basically shredding the notes out of the instrument.(Original post by confusedinlife)
nope, not an innuendo at all!
Any tips for how to improve my playing? Thanks for asking if it was an innuendo. Now everything I say makes it seem like it is.. arghhh.
The trick is to merely have a firm embouchure with plenty of support from the diaphragm. It helps to feel as if you are singing into the instrument.
If you want any specific advice, just ask

I also have to tune an orchestra next year, so any advice about adjusting the A to either be flatter/sharper? thanks! -

After that it's about the shape you make in your mouth. Having an open, wide throat, sort of dropping the jaw will create a flater sound as well as pressure of the lips.
The best way to tune is to hear the note in your head before you try to play it, like the singing thing before.
Good luck, oboe is amazing

Re: Anyone play the oboe?
Casually stalking the classical music forums and found this.
YES I PLAY THE OBOE!
I did my grade 8 last term, and got my results back yesterday. Distinction!
What do you mean by improving your playing? Are you talking about tonality? Because tonality really come after a period of time and lots of practice. I personally play on really hard reeds, so I am generally more tense when I play. It also depends on the instrument, plastic ones do not sound as nice as a wooden oboe.
Tuning in an orchestra-wise, you can push your reed in more, when it is flat, and pull it out when it is sharp, but do not pull it out too much, otherwise the C comes out very flat. -

Hey! I saw you commented on another forum too
Well done! I did my grade 8 too and got a merit
yay! I meant things like vibrato. I've seen that people do those exercises where you push the stomach out whilst holding a note. But my teacher believed that it just came naturally, so I shouldnt do them

Thanks! And that is brilliant! What exam board are you on? Apparently my examiner was an oboist. o.o
Can you do vibrato now? I still can't.
I have had goes, my oboe teacher uses his throat to do vibrato, and I think I kind of do vibrato with my throat too. I don't know.
I think I am going to audition for the NYO (well at least give it a go. hehe.
)

Re: Anyone play the oboe?I'm so sorry that I'm only just replying now! WOW that makes the fact that you got a distinction even better - when it's an examiner who plays the instrument your using, they always tend to look out for the things you get wrong that only an oboist would know. So well done again!(Original post by Heptapus)

Apparently you're meant to use your diaphragm for vibrato... I can kinda do it on lower and higher notes. But only at random times.
Wow you should go for it! Are you at uni studying music or anything? I'm hoping to study it at degree level... -
Re: Anyone play the oboe?Whooo! Another person. We're a rarity, I believe!(Original post by Harrimusic)

Is that sixth form or degree level? Go oboes! -

Re: Anyone play the oboe?Hahah thanks. Though not necessarily, because they understand what is difficult about that particular instrument. I wasted so much time trying to recover after each piece. The first time, I had a very long drink of water; the second time, I had a "bubble" in my instrument.(Original post by confusedinlife)

I don't think it matters what vibrato you do. I find it easier to use my throat. But it is hard for high notes when you are pushing air through such a small gap.
I am not at university yet. Though I am applying next you. Probably not however, I hope to do Maths and Computer Science and maybe consider a postgrad in it afterwards. We will see hehe.
That is great! When will you be applying for uni?
