How competitive is UH?

Guys, I heard from around here that going catered @ Bristol can actually be cheaper than going non-catered. Is that true?

Assuming the one that goes non-catered eats out a little more (but not at posh places) than does cooking for himself, which will cost more?

It certainly can be, as if you take last years prices, the cheapest catered accommodation for a single no basin was £136.50 a week at Badock Hall and the most expensive self-catered accommodation is probably Goldney at £136 for an en suite, and as the average student spends probably about £30 on food a week, even if you were at Durdham for £113 a week or went to Goldney but had a single with basin but not en suite for £119.50 a week it might still be cheaper to be catered at Badock. However, Badock is the cheapest and not necessarily the nicest self-catered accommodation, and you would still need to buy lunch etc.

Personally I prefer the freedom of being self-catered, but that's just me.

As far as I know it's undersubscribed and so you are more than likely to get it if you put it as first choice

If we're going on size and 'niceness' of rooms alone how would you rank the halls?

As someone who has not experienced any of the halls first-hand, but has merely look at the website and some photos, I would say these are ranked quite highly:

The Hawthorns, which is a student house right in the precinct.

Woodland Court also looks newish and modern, it's not a hall either but in the centre of the uni

Wills Hall has some cool-looking rooms in the old quad, it's a catered hall, but a 30-minute walk away

Goldney Hall is competitive but looks very nice, it's a self-catered hall rather near the uni

Clifton Hill House is a catered hall around the same area as Goldney

This is an odd question, but did we meet during Oxford interviews? I arrived on the day the chemistry ones arrived (at St John's) and stayed for quite a while. I was the Canadian girl, glasses, black hair?

My choices are a bit limited since I'm under-18; if they don't expand the options for 2012/13 academic year, I think I'll put Goldney as first choice and The Hawthorns as second. The Hawthorns is literally around the corner from my departments, which is very convenient

Haha I know right  Yeah, I'm not really bothered, though it will probably impair my ability to make drunken friends, haha.

ETA: Sorry, I just visited your profile and, stalker-like, I think I recognise you! Perhaps? Did you partake, during interviews, in a game of hearts with several other chem applicants? I definitely remember you (or someone who looks like you) in that game.

And it gets worse at university....
third year in and still getting- are you alexsheppard11 from tsr?
I have some slighty um odd questions:
- Which are the coldest halls? (My temperature control is kind of broken...the colder the better)
- Which hall is most likely to let you bring your car? (I don't have a blue badge but I do have a disability if this helps)
- How greasy is the catered food?

- How many mins walk are the halls from the bus that goes to the precinct?

- Would having IBS be a problem with communal bathrooms? (I don't feel like I need an ensuite as I don't at home... but we have two toilets between three people so there's never a problem. Are there any halls where there's sometimes a wait?)

- Would it be hard to socialise with people from a hall like Churchill where the reputation is 'rah'? The only reason I'm wary is my parents don't give me a lot of spending money and I can't work partime, so I don't know if I could keep up financially with socialising.
