Do you actually choose the Uni accommodation at Portsmouth Uni?
From what I have heard, you do not choose the Uni hall you want to stay in at Portsmouth. Eg, you do not apply for James Watson, Rees Hall or any of the other ones.

Apparently, I have heard that you have to fill in an application where you fill in your preferences and they try and find a hall to fit your needs. Eg, 'do you want catered or self catered', 'en suite or shared toilets' etc. Is this true?

I am choosing my Uni options on UCAS and the halls I get is actually quite important for me. I really want to go into a catered hall in a 'nicer' part of Portsmouth (fairly quiet, not so rough etc) and price is not so much of an issue as long as the hall is quite nice. Rees Hall sounded really good to me!

But I if i am correct, I am not guaranteed the hall I would like to go to. I just fill out an application form and they try and find a hall that suits my needs (if there is a place/the hall is not already full).

So am I correct that I cannot choose the hall but choose information about the hall I would like to go to and the Uni will try and match my needs?

You choose the type of accommodation but cannot pick a specific hall. The application form last year looked like this:

It's an online form where you rank the type (self/part/catered, shared/en suite) 1-6, 1 being most wanted, 6 least wanted and 'not wanted' if you wouldn't even consider it. Then rank the location 1-3, and select anything you would consider like sharing a twin room, in a quiet/mature flat and so on.

The two fully catered halls are Rees (en-suite) and Burrell (shared bathroom) so to maximise your chance of getting Rees you'd need to put 'Catered en suite' and 'Rees & Burrell Halls' as your 1st choices.
