i had a conditional offer from leeds .. they are still waiting for my toefl grades... but i really want to go into imperial .. it has a better world ranking with a perfect reputation :frown: what about u?

Okay. Leeds uni isn't a bad choice at all, but I guess against a place like Imperial, I can see why you keen on them. Its not just the general reputation of the university but also the reputation of the school/department to which you are applying. Imperial may be one of the best places to study in the world, but for example, in my case I'd rather study structural biology at Birkbeck College, than at imperial, cos Birkbeck has an excellent reputation in that field. It all depends on the quality of the course. But I would also love to get an offer from Imperial for another course that I have applied to :colondollar: which they are excellent at.

I applied to King's College (MRes), Birkbeck/UCL (MRes), Imperial (MRes), UCL (PhD) and Cambridge uni (2 x PhD's)

wowww good luck .. hope u get offers from all ... fingers crossed .. let me know when u get offers ..
Thnx.

I know...I have quite a long list. I just wanted to improve my chances of getting an offer from one of them. PhD is my first prize, if not I'll settle for a Masters course offer

I have an interview at Birkbeck on Wednesday. So, that will be the first one up. Will see how it goes and will post here whether I get an offer or not.

Had my interview today. I think it went well. Will now wait for feedback. I had to sit an aptitude test, which they sprung on me at the interview for the bursary (but that is more aligned to specialising in bioinformatics - which isn't what I applied for but some aspects of the course covers it).

Didn't do well enough in the test, so won't be considered for the bursary. Still need to hear if I'll be offered a place on the course.

would anyone recommend griffon studios for postgrad accommodation?

I've answered this today, over in the normal Imperial forums: GradPad Accommodation

Cyco

From my point of view, I would never suggest anyone should stay at GradPad.
However, I'm biased towards this decision for many a reason.

Bear in mind that I've not lived in Griffon, so I can't really answer your questions :P

(Because I am trying to avoid work) I'll firstly cover why it may be useful to go to GradPad.

If you're not familiar with any type of private accommodation (anywhere in the world) then starting in London is akin to being thrown in the deep end. Of a tank filled with sharks. GradPad makes things easier by being a student-y atmosphere and not having to search around or deal with landlords. Clapham Junction is a good location for distance to college, but not the... nicest... area of London (see below). For what you're actually getting, it's an okay price.

And that's it. There are also quite a few cons to going down this route.
You don't have much control over the services you get. There have been many problems with the internet, water, phone lines, washing facilities, etc, whilst still being full-priced. You just have to wait for things to be fixed, whilst privately you can sort it out yourself. Despite the mention above, Clapham isn't the safest of areas (especially for people who aren't that familiar with London) and, for example, hosted part of the London riots last summer. Oh, and the rooms in Griffon are small.

One source of my bias against Griffon, is that college (without even consulting the Union) decided to close down the most affordable PG-only accommodation (Clayponds) which ruffled the feathers of nearly everyone who mattered. Over the next few years, the population of Clayponds is getting reduced, and then the property is likely to be left empty, until it's worth a lot more.

Alternative:
So, the main alternative is private accommodation. Imperial College is helpful via having a great accommodation centre, with a large database of 'trusted' landlords accessible through Imperial Home Solutions. They also provide help when dealing with landlords, contracts, estate agents, etc.

Obviously, the cheapest route is to find somewhere with some other (Imperial) students, but finding people to move in with, can be a bit of a problem unless you already know some people here. If you join some of the Facebook groups (i.e. Fresher's 2012) then you might be able to find some people in the same situation as yourself.

TL;DR: I would avoid it, if I had a choice, but if you can't find anywhere, then it's not too bad. The pricing is fine for PhD students, but too much for most self-funded masters courses.
If you've any other questions, feel free to fire them my direction.

It is a conditional offer, the condition being that I pass an english test (TOEFL)!

The wait continues...

I have an offer for the same course too.
Offer - MSc Petroleum Engineering - condition first.
Could someone please tell me about the accommodation options for postgrads? I know there's GradPad - but would you recommend Griffon Studios or Orient House for an international student? Additionally, I have a bicycle how bicycle friendly are these places and how easy is it to commute around?

Hey AAD,

How are you keeping up? Any news yet?

I emailed one of my admission tutors last night for the course I applied to (I had his email and have been in contact with him about two weeks ago). I got tired of waiting...he emailed me last night saying that they were busy finalising offers this week  and that I'll hear from them more formally tomorrow (meaning today some time).

He did not give anything away as to whether I'd be offered a place...so I'll wait nervously and keep checking my emails and e-student account for the decision. :s-smilie:
