    Univ. of Dundee Scholarships
    Hey!
Right, I have confirmed my place at Dundee Uni and I got a message on evision with the online application to scholarships linked to it. But on the start page, it says that you must submit your application once you start the online application, so I'm too worried that I might do something wrong to start it now. Has anyone else filled in the form? What sort of questions does it ask?

Also, I am studying Product Design which is a course joint between DJCAD and Science & Engineering and, although there are no scholarships that could apply to me under DJCAD, there are quite a few that could apply to me under Engineering, Could I still be eligible for those despite my course being mainly art related?

    Thanks! x

The questions are easy, nothing you won't already know. I can't think of any of the top of my head though. It will also ask for a supporting statement. Don't start the application until you have written it, as you can't leave it once started. If you do, you have to request another email.

I'm afraid I don't have a clue about your following question, however I would assume it would be fine if they've asked you to apply.

    Good luck with your application

Perfect, thanks a lot :-) I think that I will call up tomorrow and ask them what the questions are so I can make sure to prepare some answers beforehand and also so that I can ask about which to apply for :-)

Sorry to bump an old post, but what do I write in my supporting statement? The same as in my personal statement? Thanks! x

No, definitely don't use your PS, it says that somewhere. I think it's because they've already read that. My statement was pretty short, less than 400 words. It was a bit of a struggle to write! Basically harp on about what it means to you and why you deserve it

I see... Ok well I will have to do that tonight I have no idea why I deserve it! xD I think I saw a deadline of the 12th of April for scholarships anyway so I don't know if I even have a chance... But I got the email on the 20th to apply, so surely there's a possibility that I have a chance! What are you studying in Dundee? Thanks x

    Hi!

I'm having problems choosing the right university for me and I saw that you decided to accept your Dundee University offer!!!
Dundee and Edinburgh College of Art are the two universities that I can't chose from and was wondering if you had any advice as I am applying for Product design courses too?

    Thanks

Haha you picked the right person to ask! I've done a TONNE of research on where to study and I have been told be a lot of people (A student at GSA studying PD that studied PD at ECA and dropped out, and Gus Colvin, a lecturer who taught there and left (for Dundee!) ) that it's not a good place to do Product Design at all... UNLESS you are really interested in furniture design. It is apparently very good for furniture design They used to only have a furniture design course (that's why they're so good at it) and then they kind of changed it into PD but they haven't managed to make it good yet.
In Dundee you learn a lot of technical skills that you don't learn at ECA. I spoke to a girl studying at ECA and she said that you are free to use any technical skills you have in your designs, but you won't really be taught any new ones.
Also, I don't know if you've visited both courses, but do you not get the feeling that Dundee is so exciting and everyone is very passionate about it, whereas ECA is a bit 'meh' :P
But by all means, if you're really keen for living in Edinburgh, then go for ECA because it is an amazing art school

Haha thanks for helping me out
How did you find out about Gus Colvin dropping out of ECA?
I went to the Dundee exhibition thing and saw what the 4th year Product Design students did and was really impressed I'm just worried about the engineering side of the course as I'm not too good at maths and physics but do really enjoy art which is why this is a hard decision. I know that I want to be a designer and need to learn a lot more practical skills for it but I just don't know which place to chose because people keep on telling me about how prestigious ECA is... so its hard :s

    Thanks

Ahh now I'm worried that that's not explicitly true... He definitely said that it wasn't doing so well at the moment and said he'd done something with them (I'm almost positive it was teaching...) and that's how he knows. I know because I got an offer to study PD without going to an interview, but I still wanted to visit before I made my decision so I arranged to go in and Gus spent a long time chatting to my mum and I about the course and took us around the studios and everything. It was really great, you got the feeling that the staff there really care about their students Oh I'm going to the Degree show next week I think, really looking forward to it! Ah don't worry about engineering at all because the Product Design dept. have just dropped out of the School of Engineering and we will be taught very little engineering when we do the course (all the current students had complained that the engineering was far to difficult) so you're completely safe I was a bit annoyed at that because I do really enjoy maths but at the end of the first year you can choose whether you want to continue doing PD or do DIxD and I think that I'll choose DIxD because the programming you learn is quite maths based (I think :P). I see what you mean about enjoying art... When you say you enjoy art do you mean art or design? Because I see them as quite different... Why did you choose PD in the first place? If you can identify exactly what you want to get out of the course then it'll be much easier for you to choose I had quite a similar dilemma between PD at Dundee or GSA but just wrote a list of all the things I liked and disliked about each place and Dundee won by far, it seemed so obvious when I'd done that Oh and please don't worry about prestigiousness! So many people put pressure on me to go to GSA for that reason and I just don't think it's a good enough reason on it's own at all!
    No prob.
