Im not sure how the marking works for maths. What is UMS? Is that the actual marks needed to gain the grade or a percentage. Someone help, I want to know how many marks I need for an A in AS maths. Thanks

UMS is a 'universal mark scheme' it weights the paper depending on how well everyone across the country has done. For example, in a certain paper, say C1, 62/75 raw marks might be considered an A grade, which translates to 80 UMS. For a different year, 62/75 might have only been a B grade, which is 70 UMS.

To get an A at AS maths you'll need an average of 80 across the 3 papers; so 240 UMS out of a possible 300. This is around the 65 mark usually, sometimes higher, sometimes lower, depending on how the paper is weighted.

    Hope this explained it

it differs every year like they compare the difficulty of the papers and the performance of the candidates, then they decide the grade boundaries (i.e. the minimum number of marks youll need to attain a certain grade). you can check the grade boundaries, um, a few weeks or days before the results are released, im not sure.

but if you wanna know what an A is like, try doing a couple of past papers then going to the edexcel website to check up the grade boundaries and see where youre at. http://www.edexcel.com/iwantto/Pages...oundaries.aspx here.

they try to make the whole thing fair, thats why they did so many things.
