What exactly is the music/arts scene in Sheffield like?
I'm deciding between Nottingham and Sheffield and both look great, with me possibly preferring my course at Sheffield. However I'm worried that in Sheffield there won't much to do except get hammered and dance to pop/cheese/brostep. It's not that I hate or won't partake in these things (I will be doing them wherever I go) but I'd like to know there's some "arty" (
) people into maybe slightly less popular music and films etc, to add a bit of variety. One thing that entices me with Nottingham is the underground dance nights at Stealth for instance, and it having a generally more "vibrant" feel.
Sorry for possibly sounding like an arty fartsy dickhead, is there anyone with experience that can give me some help? -

My impression of Sheffield is that it has a thriving music scene; certainly, the folk scene is probably the best in the country. Loads of small gigs at various venues around the city, as well as larger gigs at places like the Arena. Here's a gig guide that might give you an idea - http://www.thestar.co.uk/lifestyle/g...ield-1-2963263
Plus, the university music department has a concert series - http://www.shef.ac.uk/concerts -

As for cinema, we've got one of the best independent cinemas in the north.
