"Are the left to far right" Margaret Thatcher
If you look at the political spectrum of all the parties we can see as time goes on they are become more right wing. Espacially labour seeing as it's suppose to a left wing party. Apart from the conservative who are an established right wing party. Do we think this is just the normal way the majority of us think now in modern politics?

Re: "Are the left to far right" Margaret ThatcherThe political compass look over the parties manifestos and assign scores based on the policies therein.(Original post by big-bang-theory)
What mechanism was used by whom to establish where the parties were put on that spectrum. -
Re: "Are the left to far right" Margaret ThatcherWould tend to agree in terms of Economic policy. Labour leaned very left during the oil crisis.(Original post by tulley11)
1972 Labour more left than 1982?!
And around '82 the SDP/Liberal Alliance disaster kind of slotted in to the left of Labour and nudged them towards the centre. -
Re: "Are the left to far right" Margaret Thatcher
Centre right and centre left is basically the same things these days. In other words, the Labour and Conservative party are basically the same thing with similar policies. This is why people don't vote for parties any more and why politics is so dull.
There was a time when Labour used to be proper left wing and Conservative proper right, but those days are sadly over and with the need to be pro business/pro capitalist and back media proprietors such as Murdoch, this will inevitable lead to public opinion being more right of centre. Look at Blair, he made Labour pro business and more anti union, Cameron is doing the opposite now some would say. It's whatever suits the boat and what is in thei rbest interests.Last edited by Ben Butler; 10-05-2012 at 01:50. -
Re: "Are the left to far right" Margaret Thatcher
Interesting graph.
I would have to agree with it.
And no, I don't think it is the way most people think in modern politics. I think there is an unfulfilled demand for an established, more left wing party.
I think this is why we ended up with a coalition, a lot of people don't like the major parties, but they don't know who else to vote for. -
Re: "Are the left to far right" Margaret Thatcher
Isn't that obvious though?
For all the talk of a 'Left' party, no British Party are quite so stupid as to advocate anything resembling Left economics in a pure sense. The closest we see is Labour trying to over-regulate the Private sector and casually redistribute through taxation/welfare. -
Re: "Are the left to far right" Margaret ThatcherI'd disagree, they only started moving centre-left when Kinnock came in, Michael Foot was most definitely as left, if not more left of Wilson. Both of them agreed with basically the PWC.(Original post by arebours)

Re: "Are the left to far right" Margaret ThatcherThere's never really been a demand for a proper left wing party in Britain - we don't hold with that sort of thing!(Original post by meow444)

Labour tried it in the 70s/early 80s and it failed miserably. There's a reason why Blair got three consecutive terms - because he moved to the centre and modernised the out-of-touch Labour Party.Last edited by Revoked_Tangerine; 11-05-2012 at 16:31.
