Americas national sex offender register...thoughts andviews?
http://www.nsopw.gov
following the unfortunate murder of a young lady called Dru Sjodin back in 03 the US decided it would be a smart move to post every single person ever convicted of any sexual offence of a public access database by simply typing in some initials, whilst i think its fair enough people should be able to know if youre living next to a rapist of a paedophile its not just this ilk that are included on the register. some people have been added to this for crimes as little as mooning, taking a slash in public and other such petty misdemeaners personally i think this is disgraceful that people can be pubicly shamed and have their lives quite literally destroyed for such petty 'crimes'...
whats TSRs opinion on this? do you agree with the site being as it is, it should be moderated to just serious offenders who do play a risk to society or do you think it should be canned?

Re: Americas national sex offender register...thoughts andviews?
Different factors need to be taken into consideration. The age of when the offence was commited, how serious it was, and whether that person is likely to offend again.
If it was a boy who was 18 at the time, got convicted of sleeping with lets say a 17 year old girl, then really he is no risk to society. In my opinion, cases like that should be removed from the sex offender registry, as it is unfair that they should be seen as a 'danger' to people. That is why I think people on that list should have a chance to be able to have their case reviewed of whether they need to be on that list. As you said, people are on that list for very petty crimes.
On the other hand, a 50 year old man who was convicted of sleeping with lets say 14 year old girls? That is a huge danger to society, and people SHOULD have the right to know if a man like that is living near them.
So yes, what needs to be done, is people who are on there for small things, have their cases reviewed and hopefully removed from the list, then people who are publicly shamed are actual BIG offenders.
