Files taking up MUCH MORE space than they should?
So I recently downloaded some files and now my SSD has run out of space. The thing is I KNOW that even though a file says it is 500mb it is actually much much less than that. It's almost as if the metadata from the file is wrong and so saying that the file is bigger than it is.
Anyone know what is happening here? -
Re: Files taking up MUCH MORE space than they should? This. OP - How do you know it's a lot less than 500MB, anyway? Have you counted all of them?(Original post by marcusfox)
If the file is reporting 500mb to you, it reports 500mb to your hard disk, whether it occupies all that space or not. -
Re: Files taking up MUCH MORE space than they should?Because I know that the download was nowhere near complete. As soon as I started downloading it the file>>properties said that it was as big as it should be.(Original post by Pony Jack)

Re: Files taking up MUCH MORE space than they should?Yes but how big did it say it was after it finished downloading.(Original post by beepbeeprichie)

Re: Files taking up MUCH MORE space than they should?Depending on the method of download, if its an incomplete file, the space may have been reserved for the rest of it.(Original post by beepbeeprichie)

Re: Files taking up MUCH MORE space than they should?
Download programs, and notably those that use the BitTorrent protocol, will reserve space for a download before filling the file with data. This is so that the download does not get interrupted or the file fragmented. So the metadata for the file isn't "wrong" as such, it's just reporting itself differently in order to avoid further problems down the line.
