Re: Is anyone else in the Olympic closing ceremony?
Dear Josiem6
Whilst I was studying at Swinburne Junior Technical School in 1956, the Olympic Games came to my hometown Melbourne.
It was a very tense period of time because of the Suez Crisis, and also Hungary was invaded by Russia. Some countries boycotted those Games as a protest, whilst others were segregated from the Olympic Village. During a Water Polo game between Russia and Hungary, players fought each other and the match had to be stopped because there was so much blood in the water. Some governments had high jacked the Games and were using their athletes as a pawn in their game. The Olympic Movement was being torn apart and I had to do something about it.
I came up with an idea of holding a Peace March during the Closing Ceremony. However, since the beginning of the Ancient Games in 776 BC, athletes were not permitted to march in an Olympic Closing Ceremony. My idea was to have all the athletes come together to intermingle, regardless of race, colour and religion and enter the Stadium as One Nation.
I wrote a letter to the Organizing Committee setting out my idea, and amazingly the president of the IOC agreed to my idea and changed the rules of the Games. For the first time in Olympic history, athletes were allowed to march in the Closing Ceremony. It was also the first International Peace March ever to be held in the history of Mankind. I shall be at the Closing Ceremony, watching the athletes come together as a show of Global Unity and Friendship.

Hi Josie, have you seen the other thread "Did anyone else get an audition for the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony?" there are loads of people on there and it is a true hive of activity! Lots of people with roles in either the opening or closing ceremonies, and some starting to get offers of roles in the paralympic ceremonies (I am in one of these!). You should join that thread, it's exciting and I am sure you can be an interesting addition to the statistics. Are you skating?
