'Sonic Weapon' to be deployed at the Olympics

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-18042528

'The Ministry of Defence has confirmed a device which can be used as a "sonic weapon" will be deployed in London during the Olympics. The American-made Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) can be used to send verbal warnings over a long distance or emit a beam of pain-inducing tones.'

Also Royal Marine Commando's have been deployed heavily armed with conventional firearms.

Seems like London's going back to 1940.

While it may seem overkill the risk assessment process has to be based upon a worst-case scenario which would be a Mumbai style attack of multiple lone gunmen attempting to rack up the kill count or multiple suicide bombers.

With strategic planning such as this you should always "hope for the best but prepare for the worst"

Considering this stuff is out in the open I think it would be really fascinating to know what is not being made public - some pretty cool war porn i would bet.

Pretty cool technology but how long till some miserable scrotum who has lived a sheltered life with no experience of the big bad real world comes along saying it's a waste of money and it's not needed and spout rubbish about the Olympics being cancelled if they think there are threats to the games.

It's better prepare for the worst and not need it than to not prepare and then the worst does happen. Oh and if people think we should just cancel something if their is a risk then they are cowards that's called letting the terrorists win that's what France would do tbh.

What are they expecting at this Olympics? Do they think that there will be a catastrophe?

Probably not, but they still have to/should prepare for one, even if there is no immediate threat. It is a big, very tempting target for various groups out there, so every precaution should be taken

Heck, if they were really worried, they wouldn't be making these things as public as they are.
Would probably be cheaper to set up a portable stage and cart Cher Lloyd or One Direction around.
Meh, had high hopes for the LRAD but so far just seems to be a minor deterrent at best.

Well, not only would they be miserable, but they'd also be wrong.

This isn't costing anything to the MoD. We already have the kit. We already have the people. Merely relocating them for a few weeks costs nowt.

What do you expect. If any country has security issues then the UK has to add in more protection. Its just the way it works.
Christ almighty. They're really going for it with the police state now. Just wait, there'll be some terrorist attack and then they'll have us all scanning ID cards whenever we get on a train.

It's been speculated for years about the possibility of planned attacks on the Olympics - they're preparing for the worst case. Also, there is probably significant intel of cells operating in and around London in the run-up to it. Many terrorist threats aren't actually reported, but thwarted all the same. The reach of British and American intelligence really is vast.

This is crazy. This was supposed to be a sports event not a war preparation. :frown: All the money spent on weapons comes from hard-working British taxpayers. It makes me so sad. :frown:
