^ the birthday cake I made for my flatmate, popcorn is pretty much just decoration as unless you eat it straight away it soaks up some of the moisture from the butter icing and goes all soggy

I love the popcorn cake! I'm a huge fan of popcorn, so I would so appreciate that cake ^_^.

I haven't ever done any real ambitious cake decorating, but I am planning to make my own wedding cake next year. It's going to be chocolate cake with chocolate regal icing and cut-out hearts in red and silver. With owls on top. I'm also thinking of adding a secret ingredient - popping candy underneath the icing to surprise everyone. In three tiers .

Popping candy cake would be amazing - imagine peoples faces when they took the first bite!

What flavour is your cake? Being a male baker I don't do super colourful decorations but the creativity that you show in that cake is refreshing!

Thought I'd share one of the very few cakes that I've baked here too. Never thought of giving it a name for but for the sake of it I'd call it The Crown.

I recently (yesterday) figured out how to make buttercream on cupcakes look awesome
Recieved loads of compliments and I can't wait to do more, but it's soooooo expensive and I'm on a really tight budget right now
I'll upload a picture of one when I get them off my phone

It's just a plain sponge - I find that it's a lot better to keep the base plain when you have a big variety of decoration or else it'll be too sweet.

Ever since I started baking I find myself having a good stock of both basics' butter and lurpark. I'd use basics for a sponge recipe but lurpark for buttercreams purely because the quality of the butter will shine more in buttercreams (duh!) compared to a sponge(relative speaking).

A good way to increase the volume of buttercream is by making swiss meringue buttercream (or Italien) because the meringue would give your buttercream more 'body'. And it tastes lighter and silkier too.

Haha misleading post is misleading.. I meant the piping looked good
My buttercream was still slightly dull, but it was very smooth for once.
I add icing sugar to the butter slowly until I end up with a sandy texture, then I slowly add either whole milk, or in yesterdays case, Baileys.
I mix until pale and smooth then pipe

    Ah I see

Buttercream is my arch-nemesis. For some reason I can never get it as perfect as I want :/

These are the happiest I've been with buttercream.
The bottom 6 were the ones I gave as the present, the top two rows were practice ones or ones when I was running out of buttercream that my family ate!

Very nice!My favourite's the one which looks like a bouquet of flower, with multiple swirls. I've just read about how to do that somewhere recently and you've made me want to try it myself even more when exam's over!

My Grandma rung up about half an hour after I'd left to tell me that she thought they were delicious :P

I wish I'd have done them all like that to be honest, but by the time I'd worked out how to do it it was too late for some of them!
I looooove piping buttercream, I want to do more again already!

I enjoy piping buttercreams too. May I suggest piping some roses next time? They are surprisingly uncomplicated to pipe and there are lots of tutorials out there.

I've piped one or two successful roses in the past, but need a better petal nozzle to be honest before I do them a lot.
I have a pin, but haven't used it much yet.

I've made simple marzipan roses before now following a tutorial I found on youtube...
He called it a vintage or a cloth rose.. I'm not overly keen but it worked well with the torte.

I love baking - its nice and relaxing doing something that you need to concentrate on but isn't stressful or really difficult. I think i overdo it on the colours though - for me the baking and decorating is more fun than eating them haha

    I love the christmassy ones
I agree - I much prefer baking cakes to eating them half the time
