Can someone recommend me a good laptop under £400?
My current laptop (Toshiba) is dying.

I'm not sure which brand is good and will last me a few years without any problem. I need something sturdy and fast and something that won't break down, something that will still be in good condition after a few years so I can hand it onto someone else in my family (providing that I take care of it obviously).

I would need a light laptop so I can carry it around easily.

And it would be best if it cost under £400 but I can stretch to £500. Maybe even a bit more.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

Also, I don't want to buy it from anywhere like ebay, amazon etc. I would prefer to buy it from a store in London, or directly from the company site.

That would do the job nicely.

Good, reputable brand, known for their quality. i5 processor and 4GB ram. Its probably not the lightest thing around, but for the price its a very good buy. Saying that though, most similar brands laptops will all be the same weight. You'll only see a real difference if you were to buy a netbook, but if its for everyday use then I'd advise against that as the performance suffers greatly due to portability.

If you want someone that will last and is future proof for the next few years then go with something with an Intel i5 processor.

I purchased a Lenovo x201 slightly less powerful (i5-540M), same memory, though with 7200rpm hard-drive & 12.1 screen is good for transit for £380, might be slightly cheaper although I purchased through reseller...

I would have recommendations, however the best deals are on-line, getting things from a store e.g.pc world, etc are far more costly then on-line such as ebuyer and dabs. Suggest you open up other places we can look at for you because you get an i5 laptop for around £400.

I don't mind online that much, as long as it's a reputable site and it's not too much of a hassle with delivery and returns!

I don't have many problems with my laptop at the moment, it's just the battery really, but rather than replacing the battery I'd rather buy a new laptop since I'm getting sick of this one.

I'd need a laptop with decent battery life since I work outside a lot. 4/5 hours would be good. And this might seem odd, but are there any laptops that don't have visible fans that can get clogged up on the underside? I know macbooks are like that.
