Transferring to Fine Art, Newcastle- help
okay hi. I'm new here so be nice.
Basically I am a second year student at Geordieland studying philosophy. I have worked out this was the wrong choice for me and after my essay deadlines for this year (next week) have passed, the art guy is giving me an interview to hopefully transfer to Fine Art.
I've done art all my life and have always been fairly good. Dreams do not disappear no matter how long you make them take a backseat, and my dreams to do Art again properly have resurfaced.
My question is, are there any Newcastle Fine Art students out there that are willing to show me examples of their portfolio work they took to their first interview, so I can gage whether I have a real chance?
Any tips on what was asked/discussed would be helpful too but I have seen other threads concerning this that I will peruse.
It was mainly to see other peoples work so I can compare if I'm good enough.
Thanks.. -

I'm not sure if I'm what you're after but I'll give it a shot!
I have an offer from newc for fine art except I'lll be goin into the first year.
I wouldn't be too worried about your work, I think they're more bothered about how you talk about your work and your knowledge of art.
As long as you can seriously talk about your work, the ideas behind it, reasons for using certain materials etc then you'll be fine!
Have you got any work online?
The only place I have my work is on tumblr

Re: Transferring to Fine Art, Newcastle- help
Hi! Thanks so much for replying.
And that's put my mind to rest quite a bit, and does make a lot of sense.
If you can show you're passionate about the subject and willing to learn and grow I'm guessing that's the main thing they want from you, not necessarily you just being fantastic with a paintbrush.
I've read from other threads that they ask a bit about your knowledge on art history which I'll have to brush up on a little.
I have some of my stuff on DeviantART, here's a link to my page: http://emotiona1.deviantart.com/
(excuse the username I created when I was 14 -___- ) -
Re: Transferring to Fine Art, Newcastle- helpalso May I ask what was asked/what you said about history of art? Are they wanting very detailed answers?(Original post by daaayul)

Re: Transferring to Fine Art, Newcastle- helpah apologies for taking so long!(Original post by hamoomoo)
also May I ask what was asked/what you said about history of art? Are they wanting very detailed answers?
but yeah they definitely care about how you feel about art rather than your skill.
as far as art history goes they never asked me because i kinda mentioned it before they had the chance, the only thing they asked was 'what new things have you learnt from studying the history of art?' and i just said how id never really looked into neoclassical sculpture until my history lessons, and that was it.
they'll understand you've never really studied it, but i would definitely look at one of your favourite movements and learn a little bit about it so you can talk about that.
and your work seems completely fine to me!
and id recommend having a fair bit of variation in mediums and material in your portfolio, so you can show them you can change and swap around. -
Re: Transferring to Fine Art, Newcastle- helpNaah I know howw you feel!(Original post by hamoomoo)

Out of everywhere I applied I wanted newcastle the most!
Never thought I'd get an offer with such terrible alevels.
I guess they liked me enough to not care about my grades!
Goodluck and I hope you get the news you're hoping for!
