I can't decide what to DO :( Advice?
Hey
I am a first year at college and need to start deciding which unis to visit this Summer. I have been dead set on studying graphics up until like last night when I though 'maybe I should do something academic, like History'. At the moment I don't enjoy History but thats because I have an awful teacher. I don't know what the most sensible option is which course I could even get onto in the first place and which would leave me happiest in the long run, I don't want to spend 3 years in Uni being bored! Also if I go on to study graphics I don't want to do a foundation. At the moment I study English Language, History, Graphic Design and Music, next year I am studying English Language, History, Graphic Design AS level sculpture and life drawing evening classes.
Sorry I know you can't make my decision for me but my family are not interested in helping me make my decision and I just need someone to talk it out with

Re: I can't decide what to DO :( Advice?
I'd advise you to definitely pick the thing you enjoy most and not the thing you feel you 'ought' to do.
Most jobs (e.g. offices etc) ask for any degree from any university... I certainly know that if I was an employer I'd want someone with a 2.1 in graphics rather than a 2.2 in History.
If you'll enjoy graphics for three years, then do it.
If it were me, I'd NEVER do something just because I thought I 'ought' to do it. Do something you'll love for three years

Re: I can't decide what to DO :( Advice?
I know most people are going to say go with what you enjoy most but the way the economy is etc at the moment you need to go down a route which will give you good job prospects. Pick a degree that you think you will enjoy but one that also has really good job prospects. What is your main ambition? Weigh up the pro's and cons on both sides

Re: I can't decide what to DO :( Advice? That makes sense although this year I hated history and got an A in my January exam and loved Graphics and got a B in my portfolio soo... I don't know(Original post by Starfruit)

Re: I can't decide what to DO :( Advice?I would like to be a graphic designer so I suppose theres not point in taking History if I still want to do that? Thank you for your advise(Original post by TerminalVelocity)

Re: I can't decide what to DO :( Advice?thanks for your reply? Do you mind if I ask how you found your extra year? How did you cope when your friends went off to Uni? Thats one of the things I want to avoid(Original post by Mignonne)
I wanted to do graphics but changed to product design during a foundation year - yes its an extra year but if you're not sure what to do it might help, unless of course you head down the history route

Re: I can't decide what to DO :( Advice?
I don't know, you kind of have to be really interested and enthusiastic about a certain subject to want to spend thousands of pounds studying it at a high level for three years. Don't pick history if you don't think you want to spend 3 years studying nothing else.
I'd say just pick graphics since it seems that's what you're most interested in. I don't think it really matters if its academic or not. Probably would lend itself to a career down that path, but since you're interested in graphics anyway shouldn't be a problem? What else can you see yourself doing. -
Re: I can't decide what to DO :( Advice? Thanks for replying. To be honest I can't actually think of anything else I could do, where on earth would History lead? Only thing I worry about is not being good enough for graphics(Original post by Stefan1991)

Re: I can't decide what to DO :( Advice? The dole queue probably. At least a degree in graphics would be specialised somewhat. Just work really hard at it and eventually you will be good enough.(Original post by Ginger Julia)
where on earth would History lead?
Edit: People are very easily offended aren't they. Sorry if the little fact that it is extremely difficult for a humanities student to secure a graduate job these days doesn't bode well for your cognitive dissonance.Last edited by Pindar; 13-05-2012 at 21:32. -

Re: I can't decide what to DO :( Advice? It's been good overall, different from a levels in the way you work so i guess that's prepared me for uni. I didn't really need the qualification in the end, but it gave me time to decide what I wanted to do without 'wasting' a year (though now i do wonder if earning money would have been a good idea instead lol) It was hard at times feeling like I'd been left behind, but tbh it was very unlikely i would have gone to uni with any close friends so it hasn't really made much difference because we're all on our own so to speak! And yeah, a year sounds long but it went really quickly, and whenever anyone came home to visit I could see them so .. yeah hope that helped(Original post by Ginger Julia)
