How bad will having a failed AS look?
Hi, I'll try to keep this post brief, basically I am doing my AS levels at the moment. I am studying mathematics, literature, history and economics. Literature and history have always been my best subjects, and I am currently working at an A grade in economics. I chose maths mainly because I wanted to diversify my subject choices and do something different. The dilemma is that I am not cut out for it. I only just managed to get an A grade at GCSE level with a lot of work, and I have taken two of the three maths exams so far and I am fairly certain that I will come out with a D grade.
I am planning to drop maths at A2 and continue studying history, literature and economics. I am expecting to get an A at economics AS, an A at literature AS and an A/B in history AS. I am probably looking to study law. If it matters my GCSE results are mainly As and A*s. I have nothing below a B. I anticipate that I will be able to get at least AAB at A2, if not better.
How bad is the D grade in maths AS going to look on an application to a top uni? Will it even matter very much?
Any advice is appreciated.Last edited by venenecinema; 18-05-2012 at 23:12. -
Re: How bad will having a failed AS look?
If it's a D you've got to state via UCAS regardless of whether you are taking it to A2 or not (yours is evidently the latter) - it may affect your application but the vast majority of university ask for 3 A-levels. With an AAB you can get into some pretty good uni's just make sure you get it though!

Re: How bad will having a failed AS look? Thanks, I have looked at some more uni websites and they mostly require 4 "passes" at AS and then the requisite grades at A2 so hopefully I will be OK.(Original post by King James)

Re: How bad will having a failed AS look?
well some top unis may ask for the dropped AS grade to be at least a C but other than that AAB/AAA are really good AS grades (which will therefore give you good grade predictions) and most unis don't ask for an AS grade at all.
however since i am not looking to study law i have not looked at the requirements for law uni courses. anyway if you really do need to have an improved AS maths grade (because due to the competitiveness it wouldn't hurt to bump that grade up) then you could always retake a module or two (or the whole AS even). i think you are fine -
Re: How bad will having a failed AS look?Yeah, I am probably going to retake C1, if not both that and C2. I don't know the results yet obviously but if they are REALLY bad then I will retake both. I have been looking at the top 15 law unis and they generally seem to be ranging from ABB-A*AA.(Original post by poyyo)
