Hello,

My question is thus: You might be aware that certain universities of a similar standard i.e. UEA and others, put alot of focus on personal statements and thus the applicants grades can vary depending on their circumstance, preference etc. Is there a similar emphasis for Surrey or is it strictly grade focus regardless of any EC's i.e. if somebody were to apply for Politics (AAB) and achieved ABB etc. but had a firm understanding of current politics etc... read political philosophy etc. Would they still be considered?

Many Thanks,

Hi DanielMartin,

That's a good question!

In the first instance, we would look at your AS Level grades, and predicted grades however we will also look at your Personal Statement as we like our students to be well-rounded individuals. If a student is on the boarder of our minimum entry grades, the Personal Statement may then be looked at more closely in order to make a decision.

I hope this can help you, please let us know if there is anything else we can do.

Hopefully you won't mind me butting in, but I find personal anecdotes tend to be helpful occasionally...

I'd just like to add that I missed my offer - I needed AAB, and achieved ABB(B). I was accepted to my degree programme anyway, due to having done extra-curricular work with an engineering company, and a slightly unusual A-Level set (maths/physics/electronics/English Language & Literature). I know that in the Engineering faculties at the very least, the admissions tutors review each candidate on a person by person basis, especially those cases where people fall just short of what they need.

On a perhaps more relevant point, I also shouldn't have got the offer in the first place - I let myself down at AS and only got a D grade for Maths, however still got through to interview on the strengths of my personal statement and (clearly) got an offer too.

I got an offer for music (ABB course) with AS results of ABCD and predictions of ABC...

I'd also like to add that although I'm not going to Surrey (I've got a place at music college) the Uni itself is really nice and I could definitely see myself at home there

Hi DanielMartin,

I hope these two replies have also helped to answer your question. As their own experiences have helped to explain, whilst we do look at AS Level grades and predicted grades in the first instance, we also use the Personal Statement (and the teachers reference) to make our offers. The Personal Statement may be used, as in the above cases, to make an offer to an applicant who may not be just short of our minimum requirements, but shows clear potential and passion for studying their subject at a higher level.

Hope this clarifies. Thanks to EEngWillow and beanstalkgirl_24

Hi,

I was wondering about student finance. I haven't received a student loan for my 1st year at Surrey so I was wondering how and when my fees will need to be paid now I'm paying out of my own pocket. I can't seem to find a clear answer on the site so any help would be appreciated. (Also, don't know if it matters but I am a mature EU student.)

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

How does Surrey view students applying with BTECs? I'm Currently doing a BTEC in applied science and going to get D*D*D* and i am not sure whether it would be a good idea to now go and do A levels before going to university. Do you think BTECs provide enough information to go straight to university at a level such as Surrey, assuming the work has been taken seriously by the student?

Hi guys, I'm currently waiting to hear back from Surrey to find out whether I can transfer into the 2nd year of the CMT degree from my current course. Could anyone give me an insight into what the course is like? Also what is the main DAW that you're taught on?

Cheers!

I done the same as you (Except when I done mine, the max I could get was DDD) and now I'm in my first year studying law. So BTEC's are fine, however someone I know who is now doing something like Chemistry somewhere suggested to the people wanting to do chemistry to look over an A level chemistry book before going to Uni, as the BTEC doesn't cover all the things required. So really, if your doing a degree that your not expected to know anything about, don't worry. If your expected to know things, then just read over an A level textbook on the subject - don't need to bother about spending another year doing the A level

Hi Shevi!

Not to worry. Information on Fees & Funding is in “Your Money” in the University web pages but University of Surrey also has friendly experts who can talk to you about your concerns and talk you through what you need to do. See the website at http://portal.surrey.ac.uk/portal/pa..._schema=PORTAL for more information.

Please make time to go and chat to a Student Adviser at Student Receivables, based in Room 01 SE01 on Floor 1 of the Senate Building, open Monday Thursday 9 - 5.30 and 9 - 5.00on Fridays till June 15th and thereafter from 9 - 5.00 p.m. You can call them on 00 44 (0)1483 68 2610 or e-mail [email protected] . They will explain how and when to pay your Tuition Fees.

If paying for maintenance is also a problem, the student money advisers of the Student Advice & Information team can check whether the Student Finance England EU team’s decision not to award you a Maintenance Loan is correct. They also advise on sources of additional funding and on budgeting.

You do not need to book an appointment. You can e-mail [email protected] or just drop in! This service is based at Surrey Court (facing Oak Hall) and is open from Tuesday Friday most days and 1.00 4.00 p.m. on Fridays

I hope that helps.

Good luck with your studies!

Natasha

hi!

this answer won't help me - what does "subject to validation" mean for those students who have already applied for the course. Can we rest assured that the course is likely to be thaught or not this autumn (2012)?

please be a little bit more precise )

thank you!

How lenient are the grades to study Economics, like if you get one or two grades off? Also what are the prospects of entering the investment banking career from studying at Surrey?
