    Adjustment Concerns!
Hey, I'm a little concerned about something and was wondering if anyone could help out or comment on their own experiences.

I really think I'm going to achieve much better grades than I was predicted and was wondering how adjustment would work? I'd assume it's the same as the clearing process where you just call up the university and ask if they have any vacancies on a higher level course after opening results?

Basically what's happened is that I completely screwed up my first try at AS exams, giving me awful grades of CEED which naturally lead on to very average target grades of CCD. I used these target grades for university applications, and ended up picking a course that required CCC. I then went on to resit absolutely everything during my A2 year to finally come out with AAB (AS level), and this year I'm very confident I'll end up with AAB (A2 level) overall. With this in mind, I would therefore like to upgrade my course choice from the foundation course to the normal choice (Requirements of BBB) if I manage to get the grades.

What are the chances of this being successful? The university I'm currently applying for isn't incredibly competitive, and I also won't be changing the uni I've currently applied for, so would that bolster my chances at all?

I'm in the same boat as you but i'm hoping to come out with A*,A/B,B.
Adjustment is better then clearing, adjustment is for people who did better clearing is for people who did worse (I'm not being snooby but that is the truth).
On results day, if you have done better then your firm choice you log on to UCAS and look at your University choices. Apparently there will be a button either at the top or at the bottom that says "Adjustment" and your suppose to click on that.
I'm going to get in touch with Universities over the summer holidays to see if they have any places left.

If your confident with AAB, then uni's in those brackets of grades should definitely have places, as quite a lot of places are available for in clearing for AAB courses with ABB offers in clearing to fill them up. If their in clearing, then definitely in adjustment. Or talk to the uni department about it directly.

That sounds relatively simple enough. I'm hoping the Uni will give me a brief interview over the phone or something, because I'm pretty confident when it comes to that sort of thing and I like having some manner of control over how they see me.

Yeah, that's pretty much my plan at the moment. I'm just incredibly worried that I'm going to be calling up the Uni just to be told that they can't allocate me a place, because I really don't want to waste my time on a foundation year.

I guess it's my fault for completely messing up my first year though

I guess all the discussion about adjustment places being incredibly scarce I've seen just scared the hell out of me. You've helped to bolster my confidence a lot, so cheers.

Adjustment places just depend on what band of uni's your looking at.

It's actually quite hard to say how scarce places are because there isn't any list of Adjustment places like there is for Clearing, it's simply a case of phoning any university (they don't have to have Clearing places, you can literally ask any uni, though a few like Oxford/Cambridge/LSE don't use Adjustment) and seeing if they'll consider you. The number of people each year who get a place through Adjustment is pretty low (see here) but you have to bear in mind that firstly all of those people had to exceed their offer, and to narrow it down a lot more, they had to be unhappy with their firm choice or willing to switch to somewhere else at very short notice and deal with the issue of finding accommodation that late.

It may well be that Adjustment places are scarce, but there won't be many people who are both willing and eligible to look for them, which may give a false impression of how hard it is to find a place through Adjustment.

In all honesty, if universities keep clearing places and you come through Adjustment i think you can take that clearing place.
I think you should be able to because u've exceeded your target grade

Not necessarily. People can be in Clearing because they applied late/didn't get any offers when they first applied/changed their minds about what they wanted to do, and there are plenty of applicants who go into Clearing with high grades.

For Adjustment you need to have exceeded the requirements of your firm offer. See UCAS - Adjustment. If you got BBC when your offer was BCC you are eligible, and actually are perhaps more likely to find a place through Adjustment than if you got AAA against an AAB offer.
