Degree in: LAW, CHEMISTRY,PHARMACY OR MICROBIOLOGY?!
So basically Im currently taking my AS-levels in: Law,Psychology and English.

My aims for the future is to get a degree and become a pilot..... I may however join the RAF or Canadian forces (preferably) as I dont think I will be able to afford the training and I will gain great skills and experience.

I have been looking around at different unis and see that they have foundation courses which allow you to move on to the subjects mentioned on the title. The unis say that to get onto the scienc based foundation courses you do not need to have any science based A-levels.

I just want to know whether you guys think its best for me to go into law after my A-levels or to go into a foundation course that leads to chemistry, pharmacy or microbiology. Also which degree is best.

Yes, I want to train to be a pilot and therefore may probably never use the degree I get..... But I want a degree that is worth it and that would come of some use to me should I not acheive my dream in becoming a pilot.....

I have always been interested in science and in fact used to say that I want to get a degree in one of the science subjects mentioned. But I just ended up choosing Law, Psychology and English in college.

My backup plan is to be a diplomat should I not acheive my goal as a pilot; but dont know which degree would be useful for the back-up plan!

I hope you guys can help me out!

P.S. If you could tell me how much, important and what type of maths is needed for the science degrees then that would be great also, the level of difficulty on the science subjects mentioned.

Law is probably the best for your backup of diplomacy, but still... if you want to be a pilot, doesn't joining the air force now make more sense than accumulating around £30,000 of student debt just as a backup plan?

Yeah, I was thinking Law to.... But I was thinking a science based degree looks more better;though not needed to become a pilot.

Can I even join the air force now whilst I am taking AS-levels? I was thinking its best to apply when you have a degree. Especially if one does not have a grade B in maths.... One of the reasons why I preferably want to join the Canadian forces is because they have a short serving time. The RAF's serving time is 12 years!

Since the Canadian forces offers susidized (cant spell)/ free education, do you think doing a Law or politics degree in Canada (this will add a little extra serving time) is suitable? when I say suitable, I mean by being able to be a diplomat for the UK FCO with a Canadian Law or politics degree?

Is also having triple citizenship and having French and German language skills an advantage? I have Canadian from my dad as he is a Quebecois-Canadian, US as it is my second home and British as me and my mother are from here.

By the way, thanks for replying

I wouldn't do a law degree if you're not interested in it. It'll be very specific and heavy going. I'm studying for the conversion course in law atm, and most people I have met - both students and lawyers - say that unless you are really interested in law then it's probably a better idea to study something else for your undergraduate degree.

I actually enjoy my AS Law class. In fact, its the only A level I enjoy!

As you may have read, my backup plan would to be a diplomat for the UK FCO should I not acheive my dream in being a pilot or if I need a change from flying.

I was thinking I could do a science related degree here and then perhaps study Law or Politics should I hopefully get into the Canadian forces. They also cover the education costs so Im not actually losing anything; except having to serve a little extra time for them..... But I want to know whether if one can be a diplomat for the UK FCO with a Canadian Law or Politics degree.

What country is your degree from and in which country are you taking the conversion course?

I did my degree at the University of London in English lit, and I'm now doing the conversion course with the College of Law in Surrey. The reason I said about being interested in law was that I have met law students who said that (because of the possibility of a conversion degree) they wished they hadn't done law at undergrad. And also when I've done work experience placements a lot of lawyers have seemed to hold the attitude that it's probably better for most people to do a degree in something else, just because it's better to do something more enjoyable (and a lot of people don't enjoy law undergrad).

But, of course if you enjoy it at school, then I guess you probably would be somebody who would enjoy it at uni.

As for the FCO, you can apply to their 'fast stream' with a degree in any subject. The way the Civil Service recruits is by doing loads of psychometric tests and assessment days. I don't think they place much weight on the actual subject, just as long as you did well.

In my class atm, there are two Canadian girls who are studying here, but then are going to go back to Canada. So I assume that there isn't really much of a difference between the two legal systems in terms of eligibility.
