    Work experience
I'm going to be filling out my UCAS form in the next few months and recently, people have been worrying me slightly, going on about how much work experience they've done etc... I can see that when doing a medicine degree, for example, work experience is important but say you want to do english, does work experience hold the same value? I've heard from some places that if you are doing an english degree, all a university looks for is your passion for the subject and your enjoyment of reading. Is this true? I don't know whether I should be rushing out to do some work experience in the next few months or not. I'd love some advice (if that's not too rude to ask!) on what I should do. Thanks.

Work experience is always beneficial and unless you are applying for medicine etc anything is good - you can gain transferrable skills from a lot of things and universities like you to demonstrate that you have things that will be useful, such as communication skills.

everyone seems to say you need a handson approach in regards to work experience: the confidentiality law kicked that right out. i cant get a doctor to shadow and the NHS offers a voluntary thing where yu play bingo with the elderly and you don't see anything from either doctors or nurses i did that for a couple of months pointless to say the least. pester them in person you will get someone i will be doing that over summer as im either applying for 2013 entry into medicine or transferring from neuroscience. good luck!!!

Ok, thanks. What do you think would be an appropriate type of work experience for an English degree?

Universities don't really look at work experience for an English degree, and you're unlikely to find anything particularly relevant. It could still be useful for talking about with other extra-curriculars, and of course later on when you're applying for jobs, but things that are relevant academically such as wider reading are more important
