How much do tongue piercings hurt?I'm considering getting mine done this coming weekend. Does anyone here have it? Can you give me some sort of pain scale? I'm pretty apprehensive about it, but I've had my ears/nose/tummy done and survived fine?
Thanks for all the advice everyone, I went through with it in the end, and generally I'd say it didn't hurt any more than any other piercings I've had, perhaps I'm a little more aware of it seeing as it's my tongue so it moves more and is inside me mouth ofc but that's it
Would advise anyone to go for it if they're thinking about it.

Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?
The piercing itself I found wasn't too bad, for me it was the week after that wasn't too fun. I was reduced to eating chocolate mousse for a considerable amount of my meals
. At first it will be pierced with a bigger bar to allow for swelling, then changed to a smaller bar. It becomes a lot more comfortable when the smaller bar is put in.

Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?
Having my tongue done was definitely one of my least painful piercings (tragus being the worst, that was EXCRUCIATING) 'Karm' is right, the following week or so is the wort part of it all, if you're a big eater like me it's extremely annoying having to spend most of your day swallowing down baby food/spaghetti hoops, frubes (can't eat yoghurt from a pot because you can't take it off the spoon properly) just to satisfy your hunger. If you actually do want it though and are prepared to eat boring sloppy foods for a while and not give up and take it out then go for it

Also you may be scared to talk at first or feel like you can't properly, but you can, it doesn't hurt and you just have to put a bit of effort into sounding normal. Also as i'm sure you're aware make sure you go to a reputable piercer (unlike my friend), an off centre tongue piercing looks ridiculous.
One last thing, don't go crazy on the anti-bacterial mouthwash, if you wash after every single thing you eat it ruins the taste of the next thing you eat, considering you have to eat almost non-stop :P And when you do want to eat solids, the best thing to remember is to keep your tongue flat when chewing, it's the most effective way of keeping it out of harms way.Last edited by Sosidge; 21-05-2012 at 15:50. -
Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?
Mine didnt hurt at all, its just quite a strange feeling moving your tongue during the actual piercing process.
Mine did bleed afterwards, i had to wait about 10 mins washing my mouth out with cold water until it stopped, apparently im quite the bleeder.
I didnt really have any problems with food after the first day, and it was less of a pain thing and more that it was just akward because of the tongue swelling and having this bar in it that i just wasnt used to and it just felt huge.
I found just putting food to the back of my mouth in small pieces behind the piercing was easiest, so all food was fine I just cut it up small.
As the swelling goes down you get more and more space on the bar so just a warning to be a bit careful with chewing that you dont accidently bite down hard on the bar. -
Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?
The piercing itself doesnt hurt at all, but if you smoke you are meant to wash your mouth out everytime you do which can be a pain.
Its the maintenance of the thing that gets a bit annoying. Eating can be a problem because you sometimes bite down on the balls of the bar, but you get the hang of it after 2 days or so. Also people say you sound different when you talk, but everyone at college didnt know i got it done until i laughed like a witchh and someone pointed it out!!
So yeah it doesnt hurt, but its something you have to take care of for a while. My belly button and ears and tattoos hurt more than the tongue bar!!! -
Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?
The actual piercing doesnt really hurt that much.
I found it really uncomfortable for the following week. Was eating yoghurt and milkshake for a week.
They usually give you a long bar after you get it done as your tongue will swell. This makes it really difficult to eat as the bar gets caught on teeth. Once you get a smaller bar in its far more comfortable.
But from my experience, it can ruin your teeth, reduces the amount you can taste, and i found it generally more annoying than pleasurable. -
Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?
Naturally, it's not pain free. The worst part is the idea of it being internal which made me feel quite vulnerable - you'll see what I mean if you do go ahead with it.
However, it really isn't that bad. If you can handle your nose cartilage, you will be fine

Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?
Mine hurt a bit while getting pierced but that was to be expected, it bled for about fifteen minutes after too which worried me a bit but the piercer was one of the most reputable in the UK (it was at a tattoo convention) so I was pretty confident it was all normal.
The week after I got it pierced though was horrible, I have quite a small mouth and the large bar made me break out in ulcers and the pain was constant. I changed my bar earlier than recommended because it got so bad.
Now I've had it for six months I love my tongue piercing but if it closed up I don't think I'd ever have it done again, it's not worth the hassle. It's sore when I have to take it out for 9 hour shifts at work and I've swallowed a few of the bars in my time (depending on how you talk/eat you tend to unscrew the balls) but apart from that it's alright and it's great to play with

Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?
The thing with piercings is the after pain. I have 6 up to now and the most painful for me bar far was my scaffold or industrial. Every time i hit off it feels like a knife...
Tongue on the other hand is a muscle like i said to everyone i know that has had it done please if you do don't smoke! Infections look horrible! -

Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?I did, and it wasn't painful for the first day but have just been through the second day and am in constant, pretty strong pain...about as strong as a dull cramp, that's the best I can describe it, but it's literally relentless and I've run out of painkillers, hence why I'm writing this at 4.20 am, I can't sleep!(Original post by nash_4_lyf)
So...did you do it????
Also eating is a mission, I'm sticking to diet shake meal replacement things because even thick stuff like soup is a bit of an ordeal.

Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt? That definitely won't happen! The swelling of your tongue is a natural defence mechanism to you having got something sharp poked through it, it just shows your body is reacting in a healthy way. Your tongue heals super-quick compared to other parts of your body, and once this starts to happen, the swelling will go down because the reaction to the pain is no longer needed. Very un-scientific way of explaining it but it is true(Original post by allthelove)
My friend said she lived off ice-pops for about a week after she'd had hers done! I really want mine doing also, but I'm scared that my tongue will swell up and won't go down! Or am I being paranoid...

Re: How much do tongue piercings hurt?
They spray your tongue to numb it beforehand and getting it pierced happens too fast to register any pain. I've had the top of my ear, earlobes and nose done before and there is a bit of pain with them but tongue, hardly any!
Afterwards it is sore for a few days though mind. You won't be able to eat much (just liquids) for a couple of days so I advise having something to eat before hand so you're not that hungry for the rest of the day. I had soup, mashed potato, ice-cream and ice lollies for 3 days before my tongue went down enough to chew properly.
Oh and if you're a smoker then buy some good mouthwash and just swill your mouth out afterwards each time you smoke. Good idea to do it each time you eat or drink anything (besides water) as well for the first 5-7 days as it heals. I personally was pretty slack and never had any problems but everyone is different.Last edited by Tsubasa; 03-06-2012 at 03:48.
