When I was younger I was really into Nickel Creek. But that's about, I think. I'd like to get more familiar with folk and bluegrass music though.

I love love love folk music. I can't understand why people want to listen to that awful electronic stuff with autotuned voices and stuff, when they can listen to music which is from the heart, and actually MEANS something to the person singing it.

I love Mumford and Sons and Ben Howard especially.
Go for the banjo thing, I think its brilliant.

Do you think you would like to learn Bluegrass style banjo or more like, clawhammer/old time banjo?

Trad folk is where it's at:

Neo/nu folk like mumford and sons is decent enough, but it just doesn't have the same charm.

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread and look through all the suggestions!

I love this song. I think the band supported Mumford & Sons on tour but nobody seems to have heard of them.

People think I'm a bit weird for finding banjos and accordians cool.

Oh, I just put my ipod on shuffle and this came up:

Just in case there are people who are unfortunate enough to never have heard Beirut.

I love the first song..... I feel kinda sad I never heard of that before since I'm a major Mumford and Sons fan! I like the edge of these banjo songs have compared to normal folk/ country music....

Tis similar to the Mumford & Son style, but still a great track.

Also I really like this, so I thought I'd share it

From a movie called 'O brother Where art though'. It's got George Clooney in it and probably has the best soundtrack EVER

I recently got a banjo for my eighteenth birthday, but I haven't had any lessons yet due to being to busy.

Do you think you could explain the differences in style to me?

It's not their only UK performance - they're in Leeds in September. Where I would be living. But I am interrailing and cannot see them which has devastated me. Plus I love the Field Day line-up it's ridiculous. Basically, I'm unbelievably jealous of you :P

I'm not a fan of traditional bluegrass but I LOVE experimental/Appalachian-influenced folk artists.

In love with Abigail Washburn's music at the moment:

I disagree, I find a lot of the more traditional stuff a bit boring and safe (with exceptions of course):

But Mumford & Sons and bands akin to them aren't folk they're just pop with banjos.

I can't say I've ever found trad folk boring, once you put the songs into context. The complexity of the lyrics is hardly Shakespeare, but there's some nice metaphors and melodies. I have a book of english folk songs which has the words, melody and some historical context. For someone interested in english history and many kinds of music, it works well for me!
