What to do if you can't get a summer job?
Not through lack of trying, I haven't yet managed to get a job over the uni Summer holidays. I've been applying for mostly residential jobs as I don't really want to go back home, but i'll now have to go back so will hand out CVs in my home town to as many places as possible.

However there's hardly anything going there and so a good chance I just wont get a job this summer - what else can you do, apart from travel (Purely because of the cost), to make the most of the Summer holidays?

I really don't want to end up wasting all the time and getting depressed being at home with nothing to do!

Volunteering could be a good thing to do for the CV front as well as doing something worthwhile with your time. Otherwise, pick up a hobby, do that project you've been ignoring for ages, read lots, make sure you are really really solid with your degree up til now, go to a festival (doesn't have to be a big one, there are lots of small ones that happen)... the list is endless!

Recommend do-it.org.uk. They even have online stuff so if you have no means/money to travel you can help.

I'd definitely volunteer. I struggled to find paid employment when I was 16 so I started volunteering in a charity shop to gain retail experience and that helped me get my first paid job. In the job I'm currently in, I started as a volunteer and it was the voluntary work and the experience that I gained that got me the paid job.

Failing that, try fast food restaurants. I've worked at KFC and McDonald's and I've never known them not to have vacancies as they usually have a high staff turnover rate.

Volunteering all the way, at least you can (hopefully) get experience in whatever field you want to go into too

You mightve already done this but i'd suggest looking for jobs in big supermarkets like Tesco as I just got my job there and its great pay for if you're looking for money for uni and the benefits are good as well Otherwise like everyone else says, volunteering Last summer i did volunteering and some work experience but I didnt want to 'waste' my summer holidays and needed something good to put in my personal statement hehe, but anyways good luck :P

Internship? It will be too late to get one with the more prestigious companies, but you could still get one with a smaller company.

I did think about this, but I live in a small town and can't at the moment afford to pay for accomodation and food etc, in a city or larger town where the internships are likely to be.
Thank you for the suggestion though.

What kind of place do you live in? You could put an ad in the local paper or window of your local shop/post office offering to do odd jobs for pocket money, I live in small town in the middle of nowhere and there are always ads like that. Plenty of old people wanting shopping done, or lifts somewhere or even just a bit of company, car washing, ironing, baby-sitting. I know the pay is often not huge and its not a regular income but it will give you a little something.

Thank you that's a really good idea!
