Hi, I'm about to start my Computer Science degree in September, and was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for relevant work experience that I can put on my CV.

    Thanks

    Hey,
it might be worth doing a summer internship in your first/second year of your degree?? That goes well on your CV and may even lead to getting a job with the place you did your internship at! Where are you studying?

Ah right. So are you specifically interested in any aspects of computer science? I.e software development/engineering, networking..?

I'm mainly interested in the software development side. Can't really think of any relevant work experience though.

Me too. Really? I'm going to try my best to get a summer internship at Citrix next summer, which is on the software side. There must be something like that in London? Are you talking about a part-time job soon? Because I'm stuck with that too. The closest I've got is applying to PC World ha.

Yeah, a part time job preferably.
I've noticed that on most CV's people tend to have irrelevant work experience, it's all just about how you link it to the job eg, team skills, time management etc.

Yeah, I suppose if you work at sainsburys for two years and you apply for a job with a computer science degree you can be like 'I work in a team! With people skills!'

CS is more of an academic (not vocational) degree, so work experience isn't really something that they look for.

However, they will view extra-curricular computer stuff in a positive light. How about building a computer from scratch, or developing some open source software?

Yeah, I was already going to do extra curricular work.
I've already built an android application for my a-level coursework, and made several websites.
I intended to work on more projects, particularly a couple that I can link to my other hobbies.
Was just wondering if there were any particular jobs they like to see graduates with.
    Thanks
