    For this group of prepositions, you need the accusative case when there's movement (ie going to the cinema) and the dative when there's not (ie being at the cinema).

    Okay, there are 4 groups of prepositions:
    - those which only use the Accusative;
    - those which only use the Dative;
    - those which use either the Accusative or Dative;
    - those which use the Genitive.

    Accusative

    DOGEWUF - durch, ohne, gegen, entlang, wider, um, für.

    Dative

    GASMANBVZ - gegenüber, aus, seit, mit, außer, nach, bei, von, zu.

    Accusative or Dative

    über, unter, hinter, vor, neben, zwischen, in, auf, an.

    There's no mnemonic that I know of for this group, but I sing this song to the tune of Frère Jacques:

    über unter, über unter,
    hinter vor, hinter vor,
    neben zwischen neben,
    neben zwischen neben,
    in auf an,
    in auf an.

    Normally, the preposition takes the Accusative case if movement is involved, e.g. I go to the park - Ich gehe in den Park. The preposition takes the Dative case if movement is not involved, e.g. I am in the park - Ich bin in dem (im) Park.

    Genitive

    anstatt, statt, außerhalb, innerhalb, trotz, während, wegen.

    There are others as well, but these are the commonest ones
