Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing Club
I've been meaning to go to fencing all year! I've felt so lazy having all my kit sitting under my bed since September
I've almost convinced my flatmate to come with me next year though so I'm going back to my old club over the summer and I'm determined to go as soon as it starts next year
(The thought of dragging my stuff to Hillhead from the sports village after fencing seemed far too exhausting xD but I live closer next year so it won't be so much of a trek)
When is training on? I got an email a while back saying it changed from Tuesday/Thursday nights to one evening and a Saturday morning or something? -
Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing ClubIt's not that bad. Me and the other freshers walked down in first term until one of them brought her car up. We're training 4 nights a week now (2 at the city club).(Original post by HeatherHatter)

Training this year was 8-10pm Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8-10am on Saturdays. Next year, we should be keeping the Tuesday/Thursday slots but instead of an early start on Saturday, we'll have 1-3pm on Wednesdays so that the club can train while BUCS matches are on.
I think the email was sent out because Thursday training moved to Friday for half a term due to a mix up at the ASV. -
Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing ClubWell, I've promised myself that I'll be there next year(Original post by 69Crazyfists)

(otherwise, I'd have to give my little brother my swords D= and he always manages to bend them in the craziest ways... they're never the same when I get them back after he uses them
)
Yeah, I was going to go after Christmas, but then I got that email and got really confused about when the training was... -

Yeh I have a habit of sticking S-bends in weapons. But it's mainly those god-awful Allstar blades.
Come along next year. We're good people
-
Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing ClubI love Allstar! It's Leon Paul blades I don't like- only ones I've ever broken are Leon Paul ones, and the only ones I've had to bend a really, REALLY weird way. Most of my blades are super old though (before the new law came in ere about selling blades with a license, my coach always made up my swords, so they're all old Hungarian ones and stuff, all 'special' swords in their own way xD all that or Allstar anyway :P(Original post by 69Crazyfists)

I promise I shall come along next year

Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing ClubI hate that Allstar blades are really thin. I'm not a huge fan of Leon Paul Vs either (although the new SR71 is beautiful) but at least they last a few years and gradually go bad. My 2 main weapons are Duellist FIE blades. Both fantastic. But I let Duellist assemble them so they both need rewiring.(Original post by HeatherHatter)

Who is your coach btw? -
My Leon Paul lasted less than a year(Original post by 69Crazyfists)

but bent horribly after a couple of bouts and would never bend back properly. I was so glad when it finally did snap xD the only reason I got it was because I was at a competition and needed a blade :P
I don't think I've ever had a Duellist one, I tend to stick to what I know xD and convince other people to rewire for me, since the last time I tried it I ended up needing another new wire cause I made such a mess of it. :P
Before I came up here, I was at Edinburgh, but my coach was Professor Bracewell, who coaches at Wallace - I got weekly private lessons from him as well as going to the club in Edinburgh
I haven't fenced since the summer though. It's going to be painful when I go back xD what about you?

Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing ClubI think Duellist are closing down. I got two of their last blades. I'm going to invest in either some nice PBT or Leon Paul blades at the end of the summer when I have money. It's weird that a Leon Paul standard V blade would do that. They usually withstand a lot until after a couple of years they get flimsy.(Original post by HeatherHatter)

Ahh you're a Wallace pupil. Shame Bert isn't as mobile as he used to be.
I train with Bjarne Hoglund (BAF Epeemaster) up here both at the city club and wherever I can find like Fyfe TV room, the balcony of his flat or the road out the back of Fyfe House. I occasionally get lessons with Scott McMenemy.
I didn't really get coaching til I came up here. I've improved immeasurable amounts in the last 6 months.Last edited by 69Crazyfists; 31-05-2012 at 18:40. -
Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing ClubSorry to muscle in but I'd love to join the Fencing club- I'm in 4th year and havn't fenced previously- how much is it to join and also do I need to buy my own kit and mace/lance? Thanx(Original post by 69Crazyfists)

Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing ClubI'm fairly certain it's £35 next year. We have club kit, so as a beginner you don't need to turn up with anything but yourself, some trackies and a tshirt(Original post by JAZZA007)

The hope is that we'll have experienced fencers/coaches give lessons to help the beginners learn the basics with the option to take private lessons from any of our qualified coaches if you want to. -

I'll stick to my Allstar ones then xD
Yeah, it was a foil one, so I've never trusted their epee blades. I just asked for the cheapest blade they had (I was skint) so that's probably why
I'm not a Wallace pupil - I think I went to Wallace for maybe one term then left. I was a Linlithgow pupil, when there was such a club, but then stopped going to club after getting an injury before moving to Edinburgh. I kept up with lessons with Bert though
he's still giving some lessons - he gives my brother some as far as I know, but yeah, he's stopped doing as much over the past few years
he wasn't impressed when my mum told him I hadn't been fencing Dx
I thought I'd seen people fencing around the back of Fyfe the other week!!! I thought I was going mad - fencing withdrawal or something xD
Lessons are so much better than club for improving your technique and stuff I find - when I wasn't going to club, I was still competing and getting better all the time because I was learning more in lessons than I would have from fighting the same people over and over again.
I need to send off the forms for my coaching certificates actually.. They're somewhere in my room... they might come in handy at some point. -
Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing ClubFair enough. I sort of see Wallace and Linlithgow as the same thing.(Original post by HeatherHatter)

Yeh that was me, my friend and my coach. It was a good lesson.
I'd say that coaching can only go so far but you need to practice hard at the club to implement what you learn in lessons.
I passed by BAF level 1 epee and foil qualifications yesterday. Looking forward to using them. -
Re: University of Aberdeen Fencing ClubI was with my mum, she got really excited at the sight of fencing...(Original post by 69Crazyfists)

I think she misses it as much as me xD
That's true, I just preferred to have only lessons when I could only have one or the other
there weren't many epeeists at my club at the time - I think there were only 2 girls, and 2 boys who went regularly, 1 of those girls being me... it became a little repetitive, and nobody would switch weapons to try something else.
Well done!
I passed my foil level 1 when I was 15 or 16, so I couldn't apply for the certificate, and I was 17 when I did the epee, so I still couldn't apply. Now I can, I don't think the form I have is the right one, it looks REALLY old...
