Hellooo!

The really annoying thing about this game is that certain things can't happen unless you go and visit someone's town, or they visit yours.. but I don't know anyone with the game! If someone gives me a friend code, would my DS have to be near theirs for visits to happen? Yeh you know where this is going

You can either connect with someone nearby (DS to DS communications) or you can connect with somebody far away through wifi.

I still play it but my router won't let me connect to wifi I'm afraid.
You could join the animal crossing community forum (google it) and see if you can find someone to wifi with there. People on the ACC even have wifi ratings so you can find someone trustworthy to wifi with lol. If wifi is not an option you may even be able to find someone near you to meet in a cafe or something. Worth a try to get Nookingtons... it has a hair salon :P

This makes me feel old. I still think of the DS as some sort of jiggery pokery newfangled invention... Still chugging along with the Gameboy Color.
I still play Animal Crossing from time to time. To be honest though, I got pretty bored of it a lot quicker than I thought I would (based on how much time I seemed to waste on it on Gamecube), especially since I can't connect it to any wifi or whatever in my house.

Yeeeeaaah I still play it, although admittedly I haven't for a year or so but I seem to be having an animal crossing phase again haha Makes me feel old but nevermind, I tell myself it's okay because they're cute
