Re: does anyone else have internet addiction? is it a mental illness?I think that a colossal number of people spend far more time on the internet than necessary or healthy. Also, I read (I'll try to find the source) that, on average, people spend sixty-eight hours a month online...(Original post by whofan)
does anyone on here have internet addiction? -- maybe addicted to porn, forums, chat rooms, online gaming etc.
how do you deal with it?
If something is that common is it really helpful to label it as an addiction?Last edited by KingMessi; 01-06-2012 at 16:36. -
Re: does anyone else have internet addiction? is it a mental illness? You could say that it is an addiction - but individual differences are important(Original post by whofan)

There are case studies of people addicted to all sorts of things, internet, porn, even celebs!
If you think its a serious problem you should go to your GP, otherwise, it's just a habit that is stuck particularly hard, try weaning yourself off

Re: does anyone else have internet addiction? is it a mental illness?I easily spend that much time on the PC in a week, never mind a month. Summer's coming up so I think I'll be toning it down now(Original post by KingMessi)

Re: does anyone else have internet addiction? is it a mental illness?Don't see why you got negged there.(Original post by Sui-Kinxtar_kitty)
I seem to have a fascination for watching documentaries on serial killers or suicide...
I tend to distract myself with revision or going out and spending time with friends
I am constantly recording sh*t from the Crime & Investigation Channel on Sky. Go through my SkyPlanner and in amongst the rest of my family's recordings there are programmes such as; 'Edmund Kemper - The Co-ed Killer', 'Jeffrey Dahmer - The Milwaukee Cannibal' and 'Ted Bundy - Born To Kill' etc etc -
Re: does anyone else have internet addiction? is it a mental illness?Hmmm Im guessing someone thought I was just taking the piss... I have watched Dahmer and Bundy one...(Original post by Palatial Veranda)

I do recommend Rodney Alcala and The Jigsaw murderer ones too...
Stuff on the Golden Gate Bridge is so touching...
Hmm might have a look at Kemper... -
Re: does anyone else have internet addiction? is it a mental illness?
If internet use is a problem for you, then I really don't think it matters whether it's classified as a mental illness or not (depending on this year's fashions in psychiatry). The key thing is that if any of your behaviours/activities is causing you distress and/or causing harm in other areas of your life, then you need to do something about it. I'd suggest that reading a good self-help book on addiction is a sensible first step - they often have tips on how to control internet overuse, eg with software. If serious, sustained attempts to change yourself don't help at all, consider whether you need the help of a clinical psychologist or psychotherapist.

This may sound silly but I limit my own internet use using parental controls via my virus software so that I'm not tempted to go on the internet whilst doing my histoy revision (done on the computer). I do it without thinking as a procrastination technique, maybe I'm addicted, maybe not. It's not an issue until it comes to exam season
