Re: The Road - Cormac McCarthy
I thought it was amazing! Thought it was a bit slow and depressing at first, but once I got into it it was really good and I could not stop reading - the starkness and bleakness was weirdly compelling, and then there were some bits where I was really really scared! Have you seen the film too??

Re: The Road - Cormac McCarthy
I ****ing loved it; one of my favourite contemporary novels. The prose is what attracted me - minimalist writing is extraordinary, in my opinion. I honestly believe it takes practically twice as much effort writing in such a fashion in comparison to just detailed and descriptive writing because you've got to gather as much emotional impact in as little amount of words. McCarthy does it as one of the best, tbh.
Perhaps the biggest compliment I can pay the novel was that I never wondered, whilst reading, what on earth happened that caused the end of the world. I was too enraptured in the storytelling.
I actually need to re-read soon. -
I was exactly the same, though after finishing the film as well curiosity got the better of me. I wish I knew what the 'unnamed cataclysmic event' was.(Original post by amii_G)

Re: The Road - Cormac McCarthyThe mystery of it is great, though. Keeps everything on edge, and sets the imagination free. I, personally, don't want to know the answer.(Original post by Mr_WillCarroll95)

I liked it a lot. Not exactly a barrel of laughs, though.
Very serious books, I did manage to laugh at a few things in All The Pretty Horses though

Re: The Road - Cormac McCarthy
I read it a few years ago and it really didn't do anything for me. I usually like that kind of thing, but it just didn't have any emotional impact... The characters just didn't seem like people.
The gorier stuff was still just a bit... disinteresting. 'oh no, here's some dead bodies and now we're in danger from the evil cannibals'
The lack of any morality in it as well? I might be remembering it wrong, but I can't recall feeling conflicted about anything.
I should probably read it again some day, I'll probably like it second time round, but it's just an anomaly in my usual tastes
