    Internet slowness help...
    Hello!

Rarely do I post in this forum, but thought someone might be able to give me some advice on this one.

So I went home to my parents' house for a few days and used their awfully slow TalkTalk internet (so slow I could actually turned the wifi off my phone because it was quicker without it!! )

Anyway I've now returned to my own home where I have Virgin 50MB broadband, but my internet connection seems to still be insanely slow! I did a speed test and it came out to something like 100kbs which it certainly should not be

Any ideas why this is? I'm quite sure I haven't picked up a virus, and it's never happened before?

    Thanks for any advice

    Reboot the modem?

I guess it's a shared connection, so it will be affected by other people using it at the same time, but even if not, Virgin will throttle the connection at certain times if you exceeded a certain download allowance in the preceeding hours.

TSR has many forums, of which 'Technology and Computers' is only one of dozens.

The whole thing is called a forum, so it's your wording that is irrelevant.

Avoid the Porn sites they are known for slowing down your internet :/.
You could call the Virgin people up and they can tell you what the problem is. They are normally really good with this stuff. My mum is suppose to be getting 50mb of the internet thing (The same as you), but we only receive a max of 2mb on a good day and at 1am . I called them up on my mums behalf and they gave us a total discount of £21 from our bill .
Threaten to leave them it normally works or say that sky can guarantee a better connection

First of all, it's worth ringing virgin to make sure it's nothing on their side before you start troubleshooting. Is it slow on your phone as well? Can you do a speed test with your phone for us?

No, this whole thing has a number of subsections, and they are called forums. That s on the end indicates a plural.

But don't take my word for it. Scroll up to the top of the page and look at the tabs on the left. you know, the ones that say 'My TSR', Forums, Articles, Rev....

    Oh, wait.

As someone else mentioned, I meant this part of TSR. Also if you're going to pick up on details, note that I've been a member since 2005 and a large majority of those posts were some years ago, but hey thanks for your useful advice

Everyone else - it's difficult as it's a rented property, we don't actually have a phone! Just the modem, and it would be difficult to call Virgin and threaten to leave as it would have to be done through the landlord.

I have considered that will need to be an option, and at the moment I'm the only one home so no-one else is using the connection. It was like this last night when I first returned home too, it just seemed too unusual that a few days ago it was fine (super fast) and now after going somewhere with very slow internet I return and it's like my browser has decided to go very slow too. My iphone picks up the wifi and it's going at a good speed, so not sure why my browser won't!

I'll try resetting the modem and see if it works - thanks guys

    Told you so!

99% of all technical related issues or queries I have ever had to deal with, either at work or elsewhere have been solved by turning the thing off and turning it back on again.

Haha, yeah, I have been used to doing that in the past but just moved into here and had no problems with it so was convinced it was something to do with my laptop, and was too lazy to go downstairs to reset the modem

For anyone else suffering this problem.

    1) reset your modem

    2) Pull out your internet wire and put it back in

3)if that still doesn't work slow down on how much you are using eg, downloading lots and videos at the same time

    4) Contact your company, if nothing happens after a few hours.
