Veterinary Medicine Transfer..
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone has had experience with this..
Today while in a tutorial we were discussing the fees for Postgraduate VetMed study and someone mentioned they've applied for a transfer from Zoology into Veterinary Medicine (I assume 1st year) based on their transcripts etc. So they would still be an undergraduate...
Only just found out you could do this, I was just hoping for some luck with the Postgrad route. Can't believe with all my searching I didn't find anything about this.
So just wondering if anyone has done this and what to expect? -
Re: Veterinary Medicine Transfer..
i think it's very unlikely to happen.
Bristol:
RVC:It is NOT normally possible to transfer from another course onto the BVSc Veterinary Science programme.
Nottingham:It is not possible to transfer to the D102 course programme from a degree programme partly completed at another university. Applications will not be considered from students currently on a degree programme unless they are in their final year and applying for graduate entry. No exemption is granted from any course component.
Edinburgh:Can I transfer from another course either at Nottingham or any other University?
Our course is fully integrated it is not possible to transfer from any other course into the BVM BVS. You would need to apply for first year entry via UCAS.
etc.It is not normally possible to transfer into Medicine or Veterinary Medicine programmes. -
Re: Veterinary Medicine Transfer..surely this won't technically be a transfer? It will be quitting zoology and starting again in vet med, since there is no way you can transfer because in first year of vet you do physiology, anatomy etc, which although might be covered in zoology it will not be done to the same slant that they want you to have for vet med.(Original post by p3bbl3z)

Re: Veterinary Medicine Transfer..
You can't transfer from any degree to vet med anywhere in the UK but I believe you can quit and start again, in fact I know someone with 2 vet med interviews who is currently 1st year Biovet at Liverpool, BUT you could have just had a gap year and done that. It will also affect your student loan (if you have one for your current degree) as you will have had a loan (even if it's only for the first year) for your first degree and will then be potentially treated as a graduate (i.e. no tuition fee loan) or you won't be able to get funding for the entire degree. If you are seriously considering this then I would speak to the Student Loans Company before jumping to any conclusions

Re: Veterinary Medicine Transfer..The only way I can see this happening is if you very closely missed out on an offer and were put onto the university's reserve list. Then if a space became available because someone dropped out at the last minute (a couple of weeks into term at the latest) you might get a phone call. However we're talking about rather extreme circumstances with a very low success rate (and I don't think anybody can stress that highly enough). That is the only way it is possible while being an undergrad and strictly speaking you aren't transferring from one degree to another.(Original post by p3bbl3z)

The requirements and standards for vet med/sci are significantly different to pretty much anything else on offer making transfers pretty much an impossibility. I've seen plenty of people transfer from Vet Med/Sci onto other courses but I've never seen the inverse. On a similar note the pace of work is so great that if you're even only a couple of weeks behind you will struggle to pass your exams, which is another reason why transfers are not realistic. -
Re: Veterinary Medicine Transfer..
Sorry I understand it's not a transfer exactly.
It's more applying to Veterinary Medicine but using 1st/2nd years transcripts of another degree as extra 'evidence' towards your grades.
I know the girl in my tutor group has had an interview with UoL for Veterinary Medicine by doing this, was just wondering if anyone here has done it.
I've looked into the loans side of things, entire degree unlikely to be funded, but i'm currently looking at methods to fund an entire Postgraduate degree, so a couple of years for the undergrad fees are not really worrying me to be honest
I'm not considering just dropping out now and hoping for the best, I intend to continue my degree for the time being and apply postgrad if I have no luck with this. -
Re: Veterinary Medicine Transfer..
A friend of mine did two years of a Biology degree and applied for Vet Med in her 2nd year. So she never graduated in Bio, still pays undergrad tuition fees and therefore gets loans. But obviously she had good grades and a lot of work experience and all the usual criteria, and she applied through UCAS so it was just lucky that she got a place at Bristol and could stay on here.

I have all the relevant work experience and more so (3+ years working at a vets, zoo work etc.)
I'm currently on track for a 1st and don't intend to graduate Zoology if I get accepted -
Re: Veterinary Medicine Transfer..Firstly there is no UoL Veterinary Medicine. I assume you mean RVC as we are part of the UoL?(Original post by p3bbl3z)

But I would still say, as the others on this thread are doing, that this is not a transfer. It is just applying for another course whilst on one course. Check with universities...but I would expect that you still need the right a level grades, as at this stage you have nothing on paper to supersede it. Asking to see transcript for 1st/2nd year would literally just be to see how your progress on that is. Because if you are screwing up in your zoology degree, despite good a levels, there are likely to not give you an offer. Good grades in your degree so far might look good, but I doubt it would help a huge amount, they will still want good alevel grades, work experience etc etc. You also had the added problem that you look flighty and have to convince them you will stick at this course. Yes, you can say vet med is what you want to do, but no doubt you would have told your current uni that zoology is what you want to do. Trying to convince somewhere that you are happy to drop out of your current uni, but not their uni is not going to be easy. -
Re: Veterinary Medicine Transfer..
Helloo
I have just finished first year Bioveterinary Science at Liverpool. I have always wanted to be a vet however did not apply for it as my AS level grades were BBCD so wouldn't think they would take a single look at my application. I resat and in A-level got A*AC. I got accepted onto Bioveterinary Science in liverpool but throughout the whole year I have still not been satisfied and want to be a vet sooooo badly!
So I've been thinking to drop out of Liverpool and reapply for Vet medicine for 2013. I'm hoping to complete all my work experience this summer, and go back to resit my chemistry to get it up to an A/A* next year.
So by the end of next year I plan to have A*AA and all my work experience complete.
Is anyone else in a similar situation or been considered for Vet school having a similar situation to me?
x
