Re: Clearing
If you miss your grades by one, say BBB instead of ABB, does that mean you're more likely to be let in than not? Because surely they'd have more courses in clearing if they were strict? Unless of course UoM play a high risk strategy and hand out many more offers than places on the expectation that a fair few will miss it, thus giving them the scope to reject those who miss their grades, even by 1 grade?

Re: ClearingDon't forget as well that there will be many people who get an offer and then go off elsewhere.(Original post by ilovecatsforlife)

Last year there was a zero tolerance policy on people missing offers (Leeds was the same), but of course that was the last year before the £9k fees with record applicants. It may be different this year but obviously Manchester is a very popular university so missing your grades and getting in anyway could depend entirely on your course.Last edited by fretter778; 04-06-2012 at 01:38. -
Re: ClearingEvery case is so different when it comes to grades, I know people who missed by two grades and got in, others who missed by one and didn't there are so many factors it's hard to predict.I know it's a hard thing to not think about, but seriously just get yourself into the mindset that you are going to get the grades and are going to go to university. I spent so much time last year fretting, counting up my UMS everyday, trying to see what grades I could get away with and I know so many others who did too. Unless you've gone over the top and set yourself the target of something you know is completely unachievable, work hard and it will pay off!!(Original post by ilovecatsforlife)

Re: ClearingI have a feeling I may have predicted myself too highly :/ As BCC student going to a AAB offer maybe I shouldn't have firmed my course. So far I've managed to get my AS grades up to ABB (I think), do I stand a chance at making my offer ?(Original post by tillytots)

It's comforting to hear success stories though

What subject have you applied for?
Biomedical science, therefore I pretty much stand NO CHANCE seeing as all the life science courses are heavily oversubscribed.
I'm hoping my personal statment, experience and the letter I received after my interview might help me 0.001% if I'm off by like 1ums or something -

Does UoM ever enter clearing?
My brother is doing law there and he says that they are putting LLB Law into clearing(Original post by Origami Bullets)
Yes, sometimes, but only for the more weird and wonderful (and less applied to) courses such as audiology. However, you shouldn't count on it, and you certainly shouldn't just apply for whatever's in clearing, just so you can come to Manchester. -
Re: ClearingHow do they decide what courses get put into clearing? I just assumed that if there are still spaces they automatically go into clearing or do they get allocated to those who did next best eg got an offer of AAB, got ABB (but still pretty close), wouldn't they give the extra spaces to those people?(Original post by bestofyou)

Re: ClearingIt depends, primarily, on whether they think they can get the best candidates through clearing or from candidates who just missed their offer.(Original post by YB101)

LLB going into clearing does surprise me though - I can only imagine that things have shifted quite a lot due to the fee changes. -
Re: ClearingI've just rang up the university and they said they wouldn't be putting any life science courses into clearing. Does that mean if there are any spaces left, they would give it to those who just missed there offers?(Original post by Origami Bullets)

Re: ClearingIt probably means that they think enough people will meet their offer, but if there are any spaces left then they will go to the highest scoring people who just missed their offer.(Original post by YB101)

Re: ClearingThats what I thought, and exactly what I didn't want to hear(Original post by ilovecatsforlife)
I swear physics is one of the main courses and strengths that Manchester is known for. Think it would be tough to get in if you missed the grades, I think they have loads of applicants as they're one of the best in the country, after Oxbridge and Imperial at Physics
But thanks
