    Care home work/volunteering
Hiya, I'm a second year reading Biomed at Cardiff Uni and I want to post to see if anyone could give me any advice.

I'm looking to get some experience in a care home or similar over the summer, as I need to do something worth while with my months off and I'm looking to apply for Medicine in the long run.

However, having got in touch with 3 residential homes in my area, they all seem to be too bogged down with health and safety/confidentiality related paperwork and regulations to take on temporary staff or volunteers. Could anyone offer me any advice on how to approach other care homes (I've just been making phone calls and emails), or perhaps some alternatives that might be more feasible? I do a bit of volunteering the The League of Friends group at my local hospital, but its selling stuff off the trolley and working in the cafe, so I'd like to do something in a more directly caring role.

Any words of wisdom would be massively appreciated!!
    Cheers xxx

Hi there, I know the red cross have volunteers who assist the elderly with day to day chores, daily living activities, worth a shot.

How about doing a week or two with Vitalise? www.vitalise.org.uk.

Hi purple rose, I am considering volunteering with Vitalise but can you choose how long you can volunteer there for or do the people working there choose for you?

How do you go about contacting care homes etc?

Do you ring them, go in or send a letter?

    Thanks

You have to do at least a week, most people do one of two, apart from the long-term volunteers who might do 6 months/a year. You tell them what dates you want, and if they have space you get it, otherwise they will offer you an alternative.

Whichever way is best for you
