    Punishment Shootings/Beatings
In Ireland many drug dealers of other extreme anti socials are shot or beaten by Armed republican groups because the crime problems are not solved by the cops.
My question is whether posters here think that it is justifiable?

Well, I think what is necessary is making the punishment fit the crime. Then people will be less inclined to take the law into their own hands.

But it's a fact of life that petty crime and drug dealing was harshly dealt with in areas of Northern Ireland during the Troubles, and thus was pretty much non-existent.

I'm a fan of due process though.

The problem in the North is that the cops have the dealers on their pay role and use them to keep tabs on republicans. This has always been the case.
The dealers get free rain to deal and reek havoc in the community's. This is why residents then frequently turn to the republican orgs.

In fact today the cops announced that they will be launching a campaign to tackle the attacks on dealers. This has left people wondering why they don't launch the campaign against the dealers!

Unless you can provide some valid evidence for the bolded statement, I call *******s

I wouldn't say the reason that most people who turn to Republican vigilante groups is because of the drug dealers. For one thing it is the Republican vigilante groups that control the drug dealers and a lot of other organised crime such stealing red diesel and converting it into white, (there was a Panorama investigation into it, it's probably on youtube.) The groups use the contacts and "skills" from the troubles to run their criminal organisations.

It's a fact. In fact dealers who where going to be shot have even pushed panic buttons.

No republican group is involved in any form of drug dealing.

I think you'll find the majority of drug dealers have not been given punishment beatings, a small number in a few Nationalist/Republican areas have been (mainly by RAD). Although, there has recently been a similar Loyalist group set up.

To answer your question though, I do not agree with punishment beatings. Vigilante justice should not be encouraged, we have a criminal justice system for a reason. People do not have the right to dispense 'justice' as they see fit, especially as in a number of cases the individuals targeted have been innocent.

Also, in this specific case turning a blind eye to such actions can be seen to be supporting paramilitary groups and their actions. These groups have no place in our society.
