Bad back big boobs valid sickness reason?
I have H cup boobs, and although I'm otherwise fit and healthy, I have to like do core strength exercises and back exercises every day or my back hurts like hell. I'm a student nurse and when I'm on a 13.5 hour placement shift I don't have time to do my strength exercises/stretches, and my back really hurts. When I started training the pain would only happen if I wore a non supportive bra, but I was only an F then. I keep getting bigger despite the fact that I have lost weight since starting my course. It's now getting ridiculous and very hard for me to carry on. Three 13.5 hour shifts in a row and I'm in agony.
My GP has done nothing but suggest the exercises, gave me painkillers and told me to wear a sports bra. GP says surgery is a last resort and referred me to physio but I still haven't heard anything and that was ages ago.
So, as I've exhausted all other options, is my big bust causing back pain a valid sickness reason? Some days I can't walk or work properly because of the pain. I get snappy with people cos I'm in such pain. But I'm reluctant to call up and say I can't come in cos of my back they'll say 1) I'm young and 2) if my back is off I won't make it as a nurse. What should I do?
To Aisha, Vickie, joinedup:
Yeah I have only mentioned the physical problems, the other stuff is just as bad. A lot of people (esp men) assume they're fake too, so think it's okay to talk to me like I'm an airhead and stupid. Or just be plain rude. I've had one patient ask me on a date, and when I politely refused and explained it's not allowed, he told me ''I'm not being funny love but you're a pretty girl with massive knockers so you must get around a bit''. Really, really, really p*sses me off.
All girls that wish for bigger boobs....take note. What I wouldn't give to be normal and not some freakshow
P.S I am eligible for surgery, but there's a waiting list, and I have to go through physio to get evidence for the back pain and even that is taking forever, I can't afford to pay privately so it's figuring out how to manage till I get surgery

Maybe you could trade places with Im So Academic, who was complaining of flat chested-ness yesterday? -

I had to reread that title quite a few times to ensure that it definitely didn't say 'bad big black boobs'

Re: Bad back big boobs valid sickness reason?
i definantly think its a valid reason. i have a bad back as well and sometimes it can just really play up (i do have big boobs - mine are a G, but i also have a problem with my back and joints anyway, ever since i was 7/8 so mines a mix of the 2 and they definately cant say that your too young for back pain). iv not had to take time out of my placement for it so far, due to good shift pattern and painkillers, but i did have to on a couple of occasions when i worked at a nursery and have missed a few days of uni time because i physically couldnt get out of bed that morning.
you could ask if you could take a bit of time out each day to do your excercises - a short break a couple of times a day is better than a full day off for both yourself and the ward. just talk to the uni and your placement mentor to see what they can do to help, as im sure they can work something out so that you can still do placement and help minimise back pain. also chase up the physio - it has helped me a bit but i think the only option that may really help me long-term would be breast reduction surgery at this point. -
Re: Bad back big boobs valid sickness reason?
That must be terrible for you. It's a legit reason if it's legitimately impacting on your quality of life, which this obviously is. Just remember that surgery leaves scarring and you may regret it (or not) down the line.
Can't even imagine what H's look like

Re: Bad back big boobs valid sickness reason?
Sounds valid to me... Used to work with a lass who had breast reduction for a bad back.
Helped her in other ways too, she was quite intelligent but people talked down to her at work, when she went out for a light ale she had complete strangers walking up and talking to her like she was a slapper.
She was a lot happier with them reduced. -

One would kind of expect a male to be flat chested though

Re: Bad back big boobs valid sickness reason?
I'm a 32G and although atm i only get twinges in my back and my back joints crack and stuff i find that horrible enough...It must be horrendous what you're going through, people really dont realise what a burden big boobs are!! especially if you aren't that big all over.
I say go to your doctor and tell him that what he has given you isn't enough, stick at the exercises and yes it is definitely a valid reason to take time off work!! how do they expect you to be able to concentrate properly if you're in agony?! as mentioned, there is always reduction but because you're still young i guess you'd have to decide whether you are ready for that and if you could live with the scars?? -
Re: Bad back big boobs valid sickness reason?
I think given that you're not able to physically work without pain when its playing up, it would be a valid reason to be off sick.
The problem is that its not something that will naturally resolve or improve with conservative measures. My cousin had a similar problem and had a boob reduction on the NHS (my other cousin had a boob reduction privately, for her dancing career, incidentally). If they are causing you so much pain it may be something you might like to consider one day. My cousin has said it was the best thing she ever did.
