Re: physics grades!I think you're going to have to retake some Physics, or apply elsewhere.(Original post by xiaoti)
I knew i was going to do bad in the physics AS, i couldnt finish exam due to time and i got a D.
for a uni that wants AAB inlcuding physics and maths to study eng i got a D for physics, A in maths and A in spanish language! wat do u guys think? -

Re: physics grades!I don't think they will until after you've retaken.(Original post by xiaoti)
im definitely going to retake physics but i mean if they will accep my offer... -
Re: physics grades! No, you wont be made an offer with a D in physics AS, because they have no reason to believe you will manage to bring that up to an A.(Original post by xiaoti)

If you're convinced you can get an A overall by A2, hold off from applying for a year and apply once you have your A2 results. It'll mean taking a gap year however.
(You could try and get a place through clearing at the end of next year as well, but don't be surprised if there aren't any places going)
Ps when did you get these results? Results day for this year isn't for another week.Last edited by The Mr Z; 11-08-2011 at 19:17. -

the results day for the AS exams were on the 11th and the Alevels are on the 18th! -
Re: physics grades!u gave me a very good hope..thanks lol(Original post by TimetoSucceed)
Explain to your teacher, they may predict you B. Put that in your application and you will be made an offer if you r personal statement is good.
I know plenty of people who got B/C/D's in AS but were still made offers so dont listen to the guy above. -

im very dissapointed!
the results day for the AS exams were on the 11th and the Alevels are on the 18th!Ah, I see.(Original post by xiaoti)
u gave me a very good hope..thanks lol
I'm afraid you are in a bad position. Don't count on being the exception to the rule; you can still apply this year, but don't be at all surprised if you get rejected. Someone you've met on the internet knowing "plenty of people", in probably the loosest sense imaginable, who having got some B/C/D grades getting unspecified offers to unspecified universities for unspecified, and with no knowledge of if they made these offers...it's not something to base your plans on.
Unis know to be sceptical of predicted grades, especially when they are in sharp disagreement with your As results.
It indicates either that the predictions are lying, or that you are expected to retake modules. A lot of unis dislike candidates who retake, as it hides their actual ability and dedication.
Your D isn't a problem because it indicates you're bad at physics, it's a problem because it indicates you dropped the ball. You need to be able to convince them that won't happen again once you go to uni.
Hope wont get you into the uni you want to, you need a plan, and that may involve taking a year out. You can try this year, but have contingency in place for if you fail. -

Re: physics grades! So look at that from the point of view of the university. I'm guessing you weren't predicted a D, so they have to work out why you got a D. And they need reassurance that you're not going to clam up at any point once you're on their course.(Original post by xiaoti)
im not bad at physics lol...it just that in the structure examn i got very nervous and i couldnt finish the exam!
I'm guessing however you're here more for advice than empty reassurance or harsh truths. If so, we can give you advice, but we need to know more about your application.
What were your individual module marks? We'll need to know those before we can fully access the best course of action for you to take, the results of any mocks you took will help as well.
You mentioned maths as well; have you taken any mechanics modules?
You say you "knew [you were] going to do bad", could you expand on this?
Some information relevant to your application beyond your grades is useful as well, extra-curricula activities relevant to your course choice and other areas that showcase your ability. -
Re: physics grades!i said i knew i was going to do bad because i didnt finish the structure exam! i can say that i can get a B if i werent nervous that day. i hope they could understand because if i got an A in maths...with mechanic and pure included. if uni's offer is ABB or BBB wat do u think??(Original post by The Mr Z)

Re: physics grades! What were your module marks in all your Physics modules and your mechanics? (UMS scores) These will be quite important in convincing a uni to make an offer.(Original post by xiaoti)

It is a hindrance but if you can give reason for it and evidence that it is just a blip, then unis will often look more favourably at your application.
If you are able to demonstrate that your D isn't telling the full story and that you are actually fully capable and reliable in spite of this, they will consider making you an offer.
If you can't demonstrate this, they will reject you.
You have to prove that you do meet their requirements as an applicant.
I can provide some help and advice with this if you give me some more detailed information to work with. -
Re: physics grades!mmm...wat kind of info do u need? the marks ill have to check again lol(Original post by The Mr Z)

Re: physics grades! The UMS marks for your modules, and information about activities related to your subject that are not part of your course. That can include competitions and challenges you have entered, public lectures and master-classes you have attended, extracurricular reading, and anything else relevant to engineering.(Original post by xiaoti)

Re: physics grades!A common sentiment, but what is relevant is much broader than what you think. Things that you may think pertain only to physics and maths are also relevant to an engineering application.(Original post by xiaoti)

Throw everything you can think of out, then we can sort through what is most useful for your application. -
Re: physics grades!the only i can say is that im quite fascinated with the physics and maths! i like this two subjects! thats why i decided to study eng at uni(Original post by The Mr Z)

Re: physics grades!Well you need to find something more than that for your personal statement. Why engineering, why not physics or maths at uni? There must be a reason you made that decision, work out what it is and look from there.(Original post by xiaoti)

Re: physics grades!hey i noticed that you are in cambridge! i'd love to go there and study chemical engineering via engineering first year. I've got a problem, but here's some backround info first!(Original post by The Mr Z)

I did really well in maths (C1, C2, M1) i did especially well in m1 mechanics where i think i got around 100ums... looking at the unofficial mark schemes..
i also think i did well in Chemistry having got 90% in unit 1 and hopefully around 90% in unit 2.. again unofficial mark schemes
I also do biology which might be a A or B and is quite irrelevant as i decided to drop it for a2..
And here's the thing im worried about
i do physics which might also be a A/B. and the module that's dragging me down is mechanics physics (70/90 ums) which i did in January and because i had rubbish teachers for physics mechanics i didnt understand it well
and now that i got taught it again through maths i do understand it! and i decided im retaking physics mechanics jan 2013. do i have a chance to tell the university that ''module 1 physics mechanics'' will be retaken and im sure to get a higher mark (using my mark in m1 maths as an indicator)? increasing my likely hood of gettting an a and fulfilling their request of a*aa? and if so in which bit of the application am i supposed to tell them?
thanks for your help
