    NYU reputation
    Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of applying to NYU next term. I don't know much about US unis but I do know of unis like Harvard, Yale, Stanford and Berkeley and their prestige. How well is NYU regarded in the US? I am not sure of what sort of prestige NYU has internationally but in particularly in the UK and the Middle East, where I hope to work in the future. How good is the NYU brand? If you could compare NYU to a UK university which would you compare it to? Does it specialise in anything in particular?

But also, the impression I have got from reading boards online is that NYU's reputation has been tarnished a little. I can't seem to understand why though. Can somebody shed some light on it for me.

I've got quite a few questions but this is all I can think of now

Would appreciate some first-hand experience form anyone who is studying there!

Yo man I am heading off to McGill this summer. It depends on what course you are looking to do there. If you want to work in New York then NYU is definitely an excellent university to go to. It has world class prestige for its social sciences e.g. Economics. There is no reputation tarnishing going on , do not listen to people who do not validate their opinions with facts because it can misguide you. If they are going there and it will definetly concern you then may be try understand what's wrong. Personally, I would love to study at NYU if I had the money because frankly its in one of the best cities in the world after Montreal hehe :P

I think its ranked 40th in the world overall but for social sciences/management and arts/humanities its in the top 20. It definetly gets on campus recruitment by NYC firms. Internationally the other universities mentioned e.g. Yale will have more prestige and may help you more to get into graduate school. If you are only concerned with getting a job go to NYU.

    Hope I have helped.

    Thanks. Appreciate it.

With regards to getting onto a graduate course, what sort of prospects are there? Does it matter what university you go to, to get onto a course at somewhere like oxford or cambridge?

It matters less about prestige but more about courses covered and their difficulty. I think NYU may be easier to graduate from than the Ivy Leagues. However, I am not sure if this is correct for all courses. I don't think it will be difficult if you have good grades.

How so? Since grade inflation at the Ivies is out of this world.

I have heard about this but I have only read about it thus I cannot comment on the truth of your statement. Please inform the OP if you have first hand knowledge of this.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree with that, its over 40 grand a yr American. And they basically provide no financial aid, even for domestic students. And you're paying 40 grand to be taught by TAs your first 2 yrs of uni.

If you have the money to spend, than why not at least go to a small liberal arts college? Where you're getting your moneys worth.

Go to NYU . I know it's expensive but it worth it believe me. When u'll finish, u'll get all the money back by working. Plus, NYU is as good as an IVY for the firms. The only difference is that courses at IVY's are harder ,so ur GPA will maybe be lower than the one u'd get at NYU. So go to NYU, make ur GPA high and let the IVY for a master.

NYU's reputation both within the US and abroad is very good.

NYU students have access to world-leading faculty, who all regularly teach classes. Contrary to one of the above posters, TA's do not teach classes; they conduct "recitation sections", wherein you review material which was given to you in class.

NYU students definitely don't have any problems getting into well-known graduate programs at any of the world's leading Universities.
