    Pharmacy at Bath University
I'm going to start my pharmacy course at Bath university this September (Hopefully i'll get the grades). I would just like to know from anyone who's finishing their first year at Bath university for Pharmacy or anyone who's studied pharmacy at Bath, how is the course like? Is it a really hard course? I know it's person-dependent since it depends on how much time you put into studying it, but is the course that intense that you may not have time for other things?

Compared to the huge jump from GCSEs to A-levels, is the jump from A-levels to studying pharmacy at university, as significant? As a person, i mainly self-teach; i don't really learn from school as much as i do when i revise the content myself, and i actually understand it when i go through it on my own. This year i've had 7 resits, whilst coping with A2; i went from a C to an A in my biology resit (i had 3 exams for that) and i got 110/120 for my chem unit 1 resit. Atm i have AAA, for my A-levels (Biology, chemistry and maths), and im predicted A*AA. Would you say workload-wise, pharmacy is tougher compared to the amount of work i've had to deal with this year?

How is Pharmacy like at the university of Bath? Are the lecturers really good? I'm not particularly amazing in practicals (lack of confidence, which im aiming to improve over the summer). Does Bath offer extra practical sessions for those who want to practise and improve their experimental skills?

How is bath as a city? Like what is there to do in the fresher's week? Personality-wisr, I'm not someone who wants to go out drinking lol, but is there other things to do besides clubbing in bath?

Good luck to everyone who's still doing their A-levell exams

    Hello!
I have just finished my first year in Bath. I would say the first year here is NOT hard but there are lots of things to memorize. We have 2 whole year unit which has hell lots of information and its 100% exam in May. But there aren't many coursework throughout the year. The practicals in first year doesnt matter. They are just trying to get to familiarize with lab settings and the techniques involved.

It is good to know that you are self-teach. This is a good thing because sometimes lecturers go through things quickly and required us to refer to the textbook ourselves.

** Pharmacy at Bath allows 1 resit in August/ Sept for max 2 modules. if you fail more than that you have to resit year 1. There are indeed ppl who have to restart again. So, bear in mind that MPharm in Bath, you have to ace every module in one go.. otherwise, you will be stressed.

Bath is a fab. city. There's lots of things that you can do apart from Fuzzy Duck (SU drinking night). Do you like Sports? Uni of Bath is famous for its sports facilities!!! Damn GOOD!!!!

We have 3* Whole year units :p:. Biopharmaceutics, Biochem & Pharmacology and Human Physiology.

Basically, everything Cindy said. They gave me work to do just before coming to Bath which I was looking at quite a lot, but in all honesty, it was useless. Just have fun and don't look at anything until lectures start after Freshers.

Freshers is amazing by the way. Potentially one of the best weeks of your life.
Oh, if you're not one for drinking there is a Movie night every night during Freshers and loads of things to do during the day. You might have to put up with a lot of noise though, so BE PREPARED!

timetable varies from week to week. One thing for sure: Free on wed afternoon. (Time for Sports =D )

The most extreme case would be 0915 to 1805 with 1 hour lunch break.
Very often we have tutorials and workshops. some unfortunate ones will have lessons from 0915 to 2pm or so before having lunch break.

In general 1st year is still a honeymoon year for pharm students. it should not be a big problem.

Hi, I'm also hoping to start Pharmacy at Bath too in september depending on my grades. If you don't mind me asking, did you get AAB at A-level to get in? As I may miss these grades if I don't do so well in my last lot of exams just wondered if you know of anyone who got in on lower grades perhaps?

Few ppl did get in with ABB. One of my friends had ABB and had to wait till clearing where Bath decided to accept her. It is hard to say this year because it is getting more competitive every year....
It all depends on the unit mark of that subject, if it's not very far away from A , then you should have a chance there. but you will be panic-ing for the whole week.

I've finally finished my last exam lol. How did you find your first few weeks at bath uni? Did you find it hard saying goodbye to your parents? Was it hard to cope with the course, when you first started it (content-wise)?

As i'm applying for acommadation now for first year, which block/area (whatever you want to call it :P) has the best room facilities?

I'm a big sports fan.. i go to the gym, etc. I heard bath universities has one of the best (if not the best) sports facillities. Is it true that you can do Kayaking as a sport in bath - i read that somewhere.

How long are the lecutures on averages and are the lecturers very good? Does bath university have extra classes/programmes for those who want to improve their essay writing or practical skills?

    i'll appreciate the response.

My first few weeks were a little weird. It is strange, initially. Once you settle, you will be fine. It was hard saying good bye at first but now, I'm fine with everything. I can live without my parents for weeks on end with ease. They speak to me more than I speak to them haha! So don't worry about that, a lot of people have issues with leaving home at first but you'll settle in quick if you make lots of friends. If you're going into late october and still struggling then I suggest you speak to someone. There will be plenty of support.

The course is actually pretty easy to cope with, it was for me anyway. There is very little homework or coursework to do. You pretty much just had to know what they taught in lectures and that was it. They ease you in on that too. First lectures are really slow.

Woodland is the most expensive, but for value for money I'd say Solsbury/ Marlborough have the best value. I think Woodland is a bit over-priced for what it is (which is essentially just a bigger bed and a bigger room). I lived in Westwood, which was alright. Norwood is ok too. I'd avoid Eastwood if you can. That's not to say it's rubbish, but if you have a messy flat and there's something like 10 people to one kitchen, that kitchen gets messy fast and it's frustrating. Norwood has this similar problem I think, but in my year, there were lots of cool people from Norwood.

You're like me then. I go to the gym 5 times a week, so I can definitely help you out with regards to the STV (sports training village). It doesn't have THE BEST, but it's certainly up there. Loughborough has a better one I think but this one is still pretty awesome because it's so big. A word of warning though, Mondays in the gym will be rammed. But by Friday all the people who wanted to start their new fitness lifestyle have given up and the gym can be sort of empty. Try to go to the gym in the day or late evening if you can because around 5-ish the gym is at it's busiest. I'm in the weight section every time I go to the gym so if you see me, say hi. You can do kayaking yes haha!

Lectures are 50 mins long. Doesn't seem long but it can be when you have to concentrate who that period of time. You'll find out . Make your decisions about the lecturers, some were good for me and others not so good. You definitely can, but because I wasn't an international student, my writing skills were ok. The uni gives you information about where to go to improve these in your first week. Practical skills will be taught in practical classes, so don't worry about that either!

Good luck for your results, I'll see you in October, hopefully.

Thank you very much for the response, I highly appreciate it

Unfortunately, when I attempted to apply for accomadation yesterday on the ''online student accomadation portal'' on bath uni's website, they said as of 8/06/2012, the following options for first year undergraduates were unavaliable:

    Marlborough/Solsbury Court
    Woodland Court
    Osborne House
    Norwood House
    Polden Court
    John Wood Building
    Clevelands Buildings
Eastwood House (Standard room with wash hand basin)
    Westwood Houses

I'm so unhappy! I looked up the images and description of Malborough/Solsbury court and it was definetly value for money, like you said. Just a shame its no longer available; the only accomadations left are Brendon Court, Eastwood Houses, Carpenter House and John Wood court. I wanted an ensuite bathroom lol, but all of those remaining accomadations are communal bathrooms. Which of the remaining 4 accomadations would you recommend? Also, do you think that Solsbury/Malborough court accomadation could become avaliable again?

I'll appreciate the response and hopefully i'll meet you in september/october. tc.

Usually people would apply in April because accommodation is based on First come first served basis. well, i suggest you apply ASAP otherwise you will be even more disappointed.standard room is not too bad. I lived in westwood where i have to share communal bathrooms. yeah. sometimes it is disgusting but most of the time the bathrooms are clean. When you live in the city next year, you will have to share toilets and bathrooms with your housemates. You still need to share the communal facilities, right?

***Solsbury/Malborough court WILL only become available for the 2013/14 academic year XD Solsbury and Malborough is off from list after the first week of application...

I would choose John Wood. Its off campus but the rooms are bigger than brendon (on campus). One thing good about Brendon is that it is just opposite to the library BUT 14 ppl share 1 fridge (maybe 2 fridge =P) If you stay in John Wood then you have to spare time for transportation but the environment is definitely better than Brendon.

Um... decide on whether you want to stay on-campus first, if that's the case then you only have Eastwood and Brendon Court.

In any cases you can talk to the accommodation officer after u've settled down. You might have a chance to move to your preferred choice if somebody quitted / moved out. (it does happen!)

This is true. My friend was selected for John Wood and then was able to move into Westwood. So places do become available. Just put yourself on the waiting list. . Also, if I had a choice, I would pick Brendon. John Wood would annoy me being off-campus but some people love it. It's up to you!

Don't think I can cover anything in more detail than the others have apart from adding that I thoroughly enjoyed the first year too!

There's plenty of societys and clubs to join there that don't all revolve around going out drinking so you'll definately be able to meet up with people with similar interests and have an awesome time. The best thing about going to uni is the people you meet by far so just try as many random taster sessions as possible during freshers week and you might find you end up enjoying something completely random that you never thought of doing.

But yeah with regards to the course it is challenging at times, don't get me wrong, but it's not unmanagable by any stretch. Just the usual thing of you get out what you put in, as long as you do the work you're asked to you shouldn't have a problem in the first year!
