So, what is life at Oxford really like?
I will be applying for Universities at the end of this year. I want to know what life is like apart from study and University i.e. what's the town like?

How hard is it to do social things (including nights out - what is nightlife like?) when the 8 week terms are so intense?

If you want to go out, you will go out.
its not as intense as they make it seem, the key is time management, there is time to do everything.

Suppose sometimes it may depend on the college as certain colleges seem to attract certain people.

Oh and by the way, i find the wording of your question strangely pretentious, probably you've thought on how to word it to make it seem fitting to the oxford forum. You'll have time to be philosophical when you hand in your work or go to tutorials, the rest of the time it's fine to act 'normal'.
Put it simply, the general feel of your question, while not out of place, would certainly not be within the mean student population. That itself should answer your question.

Firstly, it's ironic because I'm applying for a Philosophy related course.

[Also, if my pretentious typing bothers you to the extent you think I'm trying to "fit in" with the forum then I think you are looking way too far into things, my friend. I was asking a question, that is all. Please check my posts from other forums where you will see I'm still the same everywhere on this site - haha.
I'm being my normal typing self, so if you find that strange so that you have to comment insinuating that I'm trying to be something I'm not (correct me if I'm wrong), then I do find that a little insulting ]

Disclaimer: I don't think I'm brilliant in any way. I said I was academic, because I like school, but don't claim to achieve top results in any way. I'm also not posh, unfortunately the London accent shines through. I only tried to stress the academic side of me because I was worried that if I spoke solely about wanting to party around, people would say "Well don't apply to Oxford then."

    Anyway, thanks for the help.

Oxford is in many ways a university like many others. With a surprising amout of normal people. It is not this magical mystical place where we debate the meaning of life, not even 5% of the time. And this stereotype, perpetrated by the media and by the people who dont even go there, stops people from applying. Im sorry but with your wording you are perpetrating the stereotype.

(and yes, i do a philo course)

I don't think the Oxbridge stereotype is one you need to be worried about; have you seen the crazy shenanigans the Cambridge kids gets up to?! I imagine Oxford isn't too dissimilar.

i.e. In many ways they're just the same as a lot of other universities. But you'll have to put the work in when you're there. I'd just deal with getting there in the first place if I were you, however!

I wouldn't say it stops people applying. Doesn't Oxford get more applicants than most Unis? I'm not sure what you mean by your last few words, but please don't think I was saying that Oxford in particular holds people who live to study. I was merely saying that's not the type of person I am in order to communicate that I'd preferably like to go and live in a town (during University years) where there is plenty of things to do in free time if I happen to have a few nights off.

I think people have misunderstood that I was talking about Oxford town as a place, not the University. I posted it in this forum because I wanted to hear opinions of University students, not just the general public. Apologies if it's in the wrong place.

Thanks! Yes, I probably won't get in. But I will think positive from here on and try my hardest to do so. Perhaps slightly shorter terms is/will be an advantage, because it means coming home early and doing those extra-curricular things with more time? We'll see. Also, I can see for myself at the open day what I think of the place, just wanted to ask for some human opinions in advance.

Short terms is good in some respects but you have to spend a significant proportion of the vac revising and actually trying to understand most of the course!

Not really no. Some courses are close to just 2 applicants per place!
