    don't you really mean that people used to believe in vampires. People have always and will always believe stupid things purely on the basis of anecdotal evidence (eg psychics, ghosts, necromancy, spirits, astrology, voodoo etc.).

    But archaeologists in Bulgaria are finding more and more evidence to show that a genuine, widespread belief in vampires really existed.
    and:

    The bones of a man in his thirties have yet to be dated but are believed to be at least several centuries old.

    Not actually vampire skeletons, obviously.
