What extra-curricular can I do during Sixth Form to help my application to universit?
I do not know if there are any official threads which have information like this but is there anything I can do, such as gain recognised IT qualifications or something of a similar sort. i would also like these activities to be related to maths or a finance-related degree.

Moreover, does anyone have a good reading list that will help broaden the subject of economics. No textbooks please. As well as that does anyone know famous economists to read about excluding keynes?

Many Thanks in Advance for your help,

Milton Friedman formed the basis of my additional statement, I read his book "Free To Choose" which was also made into a TV series (rather old now, mind!) to 'challenge my personal opinion that markets should be controlled or at least influenced by the government at all times'. I found that was great to write about and I could develop points further from it, so perhaps think about reading something with a view to comment on how it challenged your opinions. Other than that there are some commonly recommended books such as 'Freakonomics' and 'The Armchair Economist' which you may find useful and accessible.

Read Freakonomics. there's also a brilliant rap fight on YouTube of Keynes & Hayek.

My college offers mentors for econ as an enrichment course, so you could try that? We do the financial studies one as well. I can't really think of anything else.

Wow seriously? That would have been brilliant, we had trouble even getting our Econ teacher to teach us 4 days a week.

Ours is head of Economics too (well, out of 2 teachers) but he simply just did not care! He gave us two essay homeworks in the two years I've had him. Aww lucky you I've managed to get through by reading my textbook cover to cover before exams basically. Our class resit rate is shocking though, if most of us weren't so motivated to revise our results would bring shame to the school.

I know of a few students who had to go to tutors for extra help, one girl actually paid £30 an hour to her business studies teacher to receive econ tuition... crazy. Can't wait for some real teaching at uni anyway

Textbooks help. Just get a good one (e.g. Lipsey+Chrystal) and use together with and instead of the school's textbook. Will give you additional insights.

And read The Economist, thoroughly. The analysis there will open your mind and teach about how economics work in practice, and will give you interesting subjects to explore.
