Sorry mistake in the title. I have received an conditional offer from one of my choices, I left uni a few years ago and have decided to return. However I am not currently taking any exams etc

Any reason to why I have been an conditional offer?

I applied to study Music at Salford as a mature student (aged 35). I also received a conditional offer - as my a-levels were completed 17 years previously, I had to submit an essay to prove that I would be able to write academically and cope with the work. Does your offer letter not state the conditions of your offer?

A minimum of 280 UCAS Tariff points
from three GCE A levels or AVCEs
Grades BBC

and
GCSE at grade C or above in
Mathematics
English Language

I did my alevels in 2007 a CDD and have achieved the required grades at GSCE level, I enrolled in a advertising degree however dropped out at the end of the second year(2009). I have now applied for a second year entry on a business course.

I got a conditional offer too but based on me sending my certificates for the qualifications. Personally, I would contact the uni to see if it has been a mistake on their part?

Did you put your exam results down as pending by accident? It must be a mistake on somebody's part if you are not taking any exams but they are expecting you to magically obtain some results in August. There's no alternative but to contact them. I do hope that it doesn't end in them taking the offer away, since they are asking more than you can get, but you might as well find that out now, since the offer as it stands can't be valid.

Thanks for the replies. I have doubled checked whether or not I had put pending down regarding the exams and I have not. I can only assume there has been some sort of mix up. I emailed the university in question , so just waiting on a response.

Finally got a reply -


Further to your recent email, I can confirm that we will be making offers in the first instance to those applicants who meet the grades and points of the offer eg 280 UCAS points to include BBC. Following that we will make offers to those who have met only the points. If there are places left on a course, we may be able to drop down on points but this will be in August, after the A level results have come out. If you feel you have left anything off your UCAS form which would contribute UCAS tariff points, please let me know.

They haven't answered your question at all.

From what I understand, you already have your A level grades and will not be doing any more qualifications so they should not be giving you a conditional offer in the first instance. As it stands you have CDD (80+60+60 = 200 points) and they should be either accepting you or declining you - they can not give you a conditional offer because there is nothing conditional about your academic situation. You need to contact them again and re clarify the situation.

It sounds like they have misunderstood your email and seem to think that you are enquiring about the possibility of missing your offer in August. Either that or you're dealing with someone who knows next to nothing about the UCAS process, which is also entirely plausible.

I disagree - this actually sounds more like the university wants to find a way to give you an offer straight away but that the offer is conditional on THEM having places. Which is not really a workable plan - but I can see how an admin person might use the conditional offer option to try (and probably fail?) to acheive this.

Well, that's not what an offer is and nor is it how UCAS works. A university can not give out an offer on the condition of "oh well we'll take you if we have some places left over but if we don't have any places then sorry but no thanks" as that's not how the UCAS process works. If they make a conditional offer they are essentially saying "we have a place for you as long as you get XYZ in your exams" but in this case, the OP isn't actually taking any exams. This means they should either get an unconditional offer (ie: the university is saying that they have a place for them) or they should have been rejected. There is no in between ground and there never will be - if the university is unwilling to accept less than 280 points (given there is zero possibility of the OP ever being able to attain the desired points) then a straight rejection must be issued. They can not just make a conditional offer which is completely unobtainable.

As I said, it sounds like the person responding to the email hasn't properly understood what the OP was actually querying in their email so has sent out a standard response as they will be sending out to all of the other anxious applicants at this time of year.

However as I understand it I would need to complete any outstanding modules from the first year. As the course Is Business Studies with Computing, I previously studied Bsc Hons in Advertising ( dropped out after failing second year) Most of the Business modules I will have covered however the computing ones I have not.

In regards to the email, I am confused as oxymoronic stated why don't they just reject the offer.

It shouldn't matter whether you want to go into second year or first year entry. If you're not currently doing any qualifications at all then they shouldn't have given you a conditional offer as it needs to be either a straight unconditional or a straight rejection.

Have you heard back from them yet? Sorry you're having so many problems, this must be difficult for you.
