Do i need a foundation degree to get into Brighton University studying Fashion?
I'm now going into year 13 and started looking at universities and I really want to get into brighton university to study the fashion and business course however it says I need a foundation degree, but is that essential or will I be able to create my own?

I took art, textiles, business, economics and English language at AS so will get quite a big portfolio from that and I've taken part in outside courses and won a photography competition, so have work to put into my portfolio from that, I will also be taking part in EPQ, extended project qualification where i will be creating a textiles revision guide for AS

but i still think I need more but I am wondering how much more? should I work on a1? and how many items should I make/how much research ect?

    Would love a response, thankyou

On ucas it should say what they require?

From my own personal experience i would say most places want a foundation. It must be similar for fashion as it is for fine art because you cover them both in the foundation?
I applied for a mix of foundation diplomas (which you can do direct to some universitys) and fine art degrees through ucas. This way i effectively had like 10 options put forward and i could accept more offers (a few direct and 2 on ucas)

After going to all my interviews i was told they would put me on their foundations but not the full degree course as the step up to degree is huge, not in terms of difficulty but in terms of the style you will be working in. For example art and textiles at a-level is fairly disciplined and you are inspired by artists/designers, degree you are yourself, inspired by surroundings. You need to be more free thinking and learn a new creativity!

I'm aiming for an a* in art and i have got a's in my textiles coursework, so it's not because i'm a bad student, degree is just different.

I'd suggest you start getting together a portfolio now, to save the panic later! and apply for fashion courses and foundations! You never know the foundation could steer you down a new path, specialise in pattern making maybe?

Be sure not to confuse foundation degrees with diplomas!
Best of luck, hope this helps

Thankyou so much! I was just worrying that they would instantly turn me down, as I am going to get a portfolio done and I went to a UCAS convention today and spoke to someone they said Ideally you want a foundation but if they turn you down they'll just say they'd rather you did a foundation first so I'll apply for both! thanks

Haha yeahh It's only a year and doesn't cost as much as a full degree. There is not as much pressure there either so you can have a year to just be creative and explore, discover some new talents etc!

    Best of luck to you!
